Hi All,

Been trying to sort this out for some time and for a while I was thinking of replacing my DVD player in a vain attempt to solve my problems but I want to exhaust all possibilities first.

The problem is, whenever I burn a DVD, either a copy or a compilation, my DVD Player (Toshiba SD2810) displays a "Disk Error" or "Check Disk" message when trying to play it. I have received burnt DVDs from friends most of which work fine on the DVD Player and the DVDs I burn work fine when played through the PC.

Anything I burn (including a home movie of my little girl) has failed to play. If I burn a copy of one of the DVDs a friend has sent me, it fails to play (but plays on the computer), even using the exact same brand and type of media that the original copy was on. I have tried several different types and brands of media from Verbatim, Imation, Princo, Sony. Nothing seems to work.

I am using DVDShrink or Nero version 6.1.3.18 for my copies and Pinnalce Studio 9 for my compilations. I have a MSI DR16-B 16X DVD Daul Layer, Multi Format Drive (I think this is the correct model) and am using the above mentioned Toshiba SD2810 DVD Player.

Can anyone offer me advice as to some other technique to try, or a process I can follow to troubleshoot this problem? I am running out of ideas as originally I thought it was a disc brand/type issue, then a DVD Player pickiness issue and now considering some burnt DVDs work on it, a DVD Burner-DVD PLayer compatibility issue.

Any Help appreciated.

Regards
Greg

I believe your drive is an oem benq and should be capable of booktyping dvd+r media to dvd-rom (most compatable format). When burning with nero, on the final burn settings window click options then in booktype settings dropdown menu select dvd-rom then click ok. You can verify that your burns are dvd-rom by using dvd identifier on a disc you have burned. http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/ Good luck, maybe this will solve the compatability problem with your set top dvd player. BTW I recommend useing either the verbatums or sonys, not the princo and imation. Booktyping to dvd-rom will only work on dvd+r/rw media.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. I have tried what you suggested but I am unable to find anything to do with Booktyping in Nero. I have checked my drive and it is indeed the MSI DR16-B and I have downloaded the latest version of Nero. But still no joy.

Would my Nero Infotool.txt file help you identify the problem?

You can set booktype to dvd-rom in dvd shrink if you're setting up shrink to burn with nero automatically. After you click backup click on the burn settings tab then put a checkmark in the booktype dvd-rom box. If you are burning files seperately with nero in the final burn settings window click on options (right side of current recorder) then in the lower left corner under booktype settings use the dropdown menu and select dvd-rom.

If you're still having problems post your nero history log of your last burn (excluding serial no. It usually starts with 1A20). You can find the log in program files under ahead then nero then nero history.

Hi,

The Booktyping dropdown menu option is definately not there in Nero as the process you stated is the exact one I was following. There is a checkbox as indicated below, that has always been checked. Here's an image of what I see when I click "Options" in the Final Burn Settings dialog.

In DVD Shrink, the Booktype DVD-ROM checkbox is greyed out but already selected.

Hmmm, your drive obviously is not capable of booktyping DVD+R to dvd-rom. I apologize for misleading you. What format discs are you useing?
You obviously have a compatability problem with your stand-alone dvd player. Try playing your burned copys in another player. This is what I found on your player. http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers.php?DVDnameid=3736&Search=Sea...

You're welcome. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. I don't understand why you can't change booktype. Your drive should be an oem benq and benq's are capable of booktyping. http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?category=4&manufactor=21

Would installing that Region Free software help? Or would perhaps a driver update be avialable that will provide extra features?

I don't think that will help with your problem. Have you tried playing your burned discs in any other stand-alone dvd players? Post the nero log of your last burn (excluding serial no.) and maybe we can sort something out. Have you checked to see that your firmware is current and not outdated?

Hi,

I have no idea what my last burn was, so next time I try something I will post the log of it so I know which job I was doing. Not sure how to identify the serial number to remove it but I'll figure that out I'm sure.

About the firmware. I have never updated my firmware, so would guess that it may be out of date but I wouldn't know where to get the firmware either. I'll look around the web.

Barbs,

Your Nero serial no. should start with 1A20-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX.
Give me your current f/w vs and I'll look for an update too. Nero info too will show you your current vs.

If you have more than 1 drive always make sure you select the correct drive in the dropdown menu when flashing with updated f/w. Selecting the wrong drive can kill the drive. Here's what I found showing 1.0 as an old f/w vs. It shows 2 different MSI DR16B drives and I don't know what the difference is but would assume yours is the top one since it shows 1.0 being an old f/w. http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?category=4&manufactor=21

Hi,

Success!!! Finally.

I had to install the 1.4 update (that was not hosted on the MSI site) first and then I could install the 1.6 update onto that. Can now set it to booktype DVD-ROM and the first burn was successful, a burn that would not work previously.

Thanks HEAPS for your help...saved me a bit of money.

Just one question. Can you only booktype DVD+R's? I have 30 odd DVD-R's left that I can use for Data backup if need be, but would be good if I could use them for anything.

Thanks again.

You're very welcome. I'm glad you got it sorted. I was running out of suggestions.

You can only booktype dvd+r/rw media to dvd-rom. Keep your dvd-r's for some data files you want to save.

Try some better media. Princo is not considered good media. Keep burn speeds to 4x.

it's the MEDIA issue here w/ those princos...NOT the dvd player~ :)

sorry, been going on a rant here and there throughout the day...firmware is NOT the solution (in every case) IF you insist on using crappy media~ :) i have a cheapy panasonic player that will PLAY EVERYTHING you throw at it in ANY format, but will spit out princos within 30 seconds of me placing them in the disc tray...

yes, i HAVE used princos in the past with some of THE WORST results/coasters one can imagine...try better media as mort81 suggested, i would recommend Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim...

how ya been mort? hehehe

Recommended Media:

Taiyo Yuden 4x dvd-r TYGO1/ 8x dvd-r TYGO2/ 8x dvd+r YUDEN000T02/ 16x dvd+r YUDEN000T03
Verbatim 8x dvd+r MCC003
Verbatim dvd+r DL (MKM001)= flawless no compression backups

I have 2 DVD players (Sony and JVC) both top end players and have never had a problem with Princo? but have tryed Verbatim and a couple of others with no luck, they just wont play in my players. You may be right about Princo but they work for me and they a cheap to buy. I will check out the other brands. Thanks
But I have alot of DVD's already and just want to know if theres a way to get his player to play them?

Thanks for the feed back :)

Sleighty,

All we can do is offer you advice based on experience. Whatever you decide to do with it is entirely up to you. Poor quality media is a major cause of compatability problems. It also probably won't have very good longevity. You can try burning those princo's at 1x or 2x.

Hiya kivory :-)
