I just read about zoom lenses (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zoom_lens) in Wikipedia, but I still don't understand how you calculate how much zoom you need for a particular purpose. I understand how you get the x-value (as in 12x zoom), but what do you do with it?

For example, how much zoom do I need to look at an object as if it was 1 meter in front of me, if it in reality is 10, 50 or 100 meters away? If my camera has a 20x zoom, from how far away can I take a picture of an object, so that it will appear the same as if I had taken the picture standing right next to the object and not used any zoom at all?
