I have researched this subject and understand that much as been said on this subject, however I only get more and more frustrated.

I understand that the #1 consideration is your DVD player ability to play a format and your writer's ability to burn that format. I have a Sony 500ax that will burn them all.

All things being equal. I have the following questions.

1. Is one format faster to burn than another.

2. Is the process different to burn from one format to another

3. Is one more reliable. That is does one format fail more or less than another during the burn process.

4. In addition, I understand RW is a re-writeable format. Is the DVD+R a different format than a DVW+RW.

5. If you plan to burn movies. Is there any advantage to use RW.

In summary, what is the cost/benefit of using +R / +RW over the less expensive -R format.

Thanks in advance .... Bob

1. Not really. DVD+RW is faster to close than DVD-RW and faster to format, but for write-once media, DVD+R and DVD-R are identical in speed -- i.e. if your burner supports 4x burning for + and - and you have 4x media for + and -, the process takes exactly the same time.

2. No.

3. No, only thing that matters is the media quality (the manufacturer of the discs).

4. Yes, DVD-R and DVD+R can be written only once, -RW and +RW several times.

5. No.

In summary, there isn't any benefit whatsoever if your DVD player supports all formats (like most DVD players nowadays do) to use + media for video burning. For partial data backup, the +RW is probably the best (you backup once a day 300 megs of files to blank disc, etc) out of these four (-RAM is the best).
