Before you think Ohh no not another newbie with the same question again please read on... Today and for months previous I have had no trouble with my backed up movies. But today I backed up a movie successfully as per usual next one I did would not play on either stand alone player but is playing in my computer.
So to the forums I went.. have tried different media, different movie,a alternate burning program, restarting the computer and have checked and am in dma mode the only thing I can come up with is that it has something to do with book type. I have no idea how to check and or correct this.
Can somebody please help and also give thier opinions as to the problem.
I think it very wierd that 15 minutes prior I had no problem.

Need more info on the blank media that you backed up your dvd movie on i.e what brand? And if you can, then please post the manufacture id as well. What kind of dvd burner you owned? Have you upgrade its firmware lately? Can your dvd burner booktype or support booktype DVD+R blanks?

WARNING: Do not "update/upgrade" your SAMSUNG BD-D5XXX series (Bluray Player), or else you cant enjoy any of your movie files.

as alkohol stated, need MUCH more info...

dvd model and type, firmware, what brand dvd media (one of THE most important factors and most common cause of "not playing...all of a sudden", what programs exactly are you using, booktyping is ONLY capable on CERTAIN drives, not all~ and if you are using Nero to burn, it CAN be altered/changed there~ :)

Recommended Media:

Taiyo Yuden 4x dvd-r TYGO1/ 8x dvd-r TYGO2/ 8x dvd+r YUDEN000T02/ 16x dvd+r YUDEN000T03
Verbatim 8x dvd+r MCC003
Verbatim dvd+r DL (MKM001)= flawless no compression backups

The Burner is Nec 3500AG. Firmware I no nothing about lol and as I said before booktyping also leaves me scrathcing my head lol
Hope this info helps.

hi,

well, i don't have experience with THAT particular coding on the Riteks, but i have a LOT of experience regarding the G05 coding, also 8x DVD-R media.

anyways, here is a GREAT site for nec firmwares, this guy keeps up to date and is the authority (at least for me i have a nec 3520a) on necs.

http://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware/3500.html

check out that link and you will have a whole LIST of firmwares that will work for your drive. please be careful if you want to use the modified firmwares to enable bitsetting (booktype), this WILL void your warranty and be SURE you know what you are doing and familiar with this type of flashing before you attempt it.

i know that a few members here have used the Ritek coded media successfully and they really love it, so, in your case, i don't think it is the media either.

would you happen to use Nero to burn? a Nero log would help to pinpoint the problem more efficiently. if you DO use Nero and post up the log of the burn, EDIT OUT AND REMOVE your serial number so nobody else can steal it.

Thanks for advice went and had a look at that firmware site as suggested but I think I'll leave well enough alone I really have no idea.....
Your not going to believe this, thought I'd try again to resolve the issue with a fresh mind today and low and behold no problems.
As I said I had tried rebooting system b4 I posted this thread, seems
that having computer off over night has corrected the issue or it may have been thoose gremlins playing mind games lol.
Sorry to have wasted everyones time, but I thank you for the interest.

I recommend Liggy & Dee's firmware if you get the itch to go with modified firmwares.
http://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware/3500/LD3500_2TF.zip

To learn more about Firmwares go here
http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php

NEC drives are very good drives.
Modified firmwares make them better!

Pros: around 85% will improve on media compatibility, read and write faster.
Cons: 15% if you don't know what you're doing, your drive will be terminated.

be VERY familiar with flashing firmwares before doing so...it's even MORE important when you want to flash or cross-flash a "modified firmware"...other than the possibility of destroying your drive, the warranty will be NULL and VOID as well~ that's the "down-side" of flashing firmware if you have no clue what you are doing..hehe

So it seems I can update the firmware.... but how do I know I won't fry the burner. From what I can understand I'm prompted when updating the firmware so what can go wrong? I would like to update because after a few years computer use i'm confident enough to try new things to help improve performance on my computer but you lot are scaring me back to insecurity lol

heheh..don't be afraid...just follow the instructions CAREFULLY when you perform the flashing... :) "frying your burner" usually happens when you try to "Cross-flash" w/ modified firmware that you are unfamiliar with as the process is not as simple as downloading the new firmware, double clicking the icon and let it run...

good luck, OEM/official firmwares FROM the manufacturer websites are very straight forward...give it a go...just follow the steps.

i use DVD DECRYPTER to burn so can only tell you how to do so with this apt.some one else is sure to come on and tell you how to do it with NERO etc.
with DVD DECRYPTER in write mode click
TOOLS. from the drop down click
SELECT DRIVE from this drop down click
CHANGE BOOK TYPE then select which ever drive yours is (in my case liteon).click the tick on the change for box.on the drop down click
NEXT WRITE.
do the same with NEW SETTING and click DVD-ROM
click CHANGE then OK on blue success box then OK again and away you go
not forgetting to set your burn speed at 2x-4x

Here is the NEC booktype utility
http://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware/utilities/WinBTypeV2.zip

You can use Liggy & Dee's modified firmware to set the booktype settings before you flash.
This is from their text document that comes with the download

"Q: How do i set SL bitsetting for +R media?
A: Run the supplied Binflash application. Click on the BOOKTYPE button and then the SL +R tab, change this to booktype DVD-ROM then click on APPLY. This setting is stored and does not need to be run again, unless you wish to change the booktype back to +R

Q: How do i use DL +R bitsetting?
A: Run the supplied Binflash application. Click on the BOOKTYPE button and then the DL +R tab, change this to booktype DVD-ROM then click on APPLY. This setting is stored and does not need to be run again, unless you wish to change the booktype back to DL +R

Q: How do i use +RW bitsetting?
A: Run the supplied Binflash application. Click on the BOOKTYPE button and then the +RW tab, change this to booktype DVD-ROM then click on APPLY. This setting is stored and does not need to be run again, unless you wish to change the booktype back to +RW
Important
You will need a NEW UNUSED +RW media to activate Booktype DVD-ROM
1, Having set the firmware to booktype DVD-ROM for +RW media, insert your NEW unused disc
2, Burn the disc with some data or a movie. Booktype should be set as DVD-ROM.
You can now use previously used +RW media. Insert your already used media and run CD Speed to reformat the media. Then all new burns will have its booktype set as DVD-ROM."
I've had great success with their Mod. firmwares.

They have a new one for my 3520 drives that i will flash as soon as I'm done typing this.

Just finished flashing it and reset my autoply to do nothing whenever a disc is inserted, since the only thing it does is burn.
These firmwares work in Windows, so it will be easy for you to use.
the booktype setting is in the flash.
When you open it up you will see the tab for Booktype.
Open that up and select DVD-Rom for all the different discs.
