Is it possible for me to get a USB extreme external HDD and a slim ps2 and then get the HD loader 2.0 and be able to store and load games to that external HDD without having to use my pc??

To be clear, HD Loader and USB Extreme are both hard drive boot discs. The only difference is that HD Loader is for hard drives connected by IDE (you'll need a HDConnect kit to make this work for a slim PS2) and USB Extreme is for hard drives connected by USB (common slim PS2 method). In either case, the boot discs do not come with a hard drive, so you'll need to buy that separately. If you search the forums you'll find a long thread talking about some of the drawbacks of USB Extreme, though.

And no, you will not need a computer (though loading your backups from your computer is usually much faster than PS2 alone).

so, lets say i wanted an external HDD , all i would need is to buy that and upload the usb software and it would work fine? This would include me being able to back up games and such right?

Yes, though you don't "upload" USB Extreme. It's just like any PS2 game disc in that you put it into the drive every time you want to use it. It lets you access the contents of your HD.

In case you didn't read the USB Extreme thread, I'll reiterate that there are 3 main problems with USB Extreme: 1) Not so great game compatability. 2) Slower than DVD drive. 3) Sometimes full motion videos stutter.
