I've been reading (and having myself) many questions about how to rip subtitles, or how to import subtitles to a project.
My suggestion is to open a specific forum to treat this subject, because now it's spread over the Advanced DVD user, the Video authoring and the General video forum.
I'd like to point out that non-english native speakers do care a lot about subs, because it's a good way to learn the language.
My 2 cents!

For non-native english speakers (as I am, although I speak it fluently) subs are very important. I've tried to learn as much as possible, and there have been new problems popping up all the time. Thus I don't think it's that simple to write a guide which encompasses everything because there are over 20 different subs format, and I propose a forum therefore.
I hope some admin can give it a thought...

I work with Subtitle Workshop for instance, and it has compatibility for over 20 different subtitle formats. Each of them is different, so imagine that there's no unique answer!
Perhaps it could be easier if all doubts were concentrated on just one forum....
Perhaps

Hi, I am using Vob2Sub to rip SVCD or CVD subtitles from SVCDs or CVDs.
The thing I get is a winsubmux compatible file i.e. a .sub file with reference BMPS (I get the BMPs, too). My problem is that I looking for a way to convert it to e.g. .srt or some format that will allow me to put the subtitles to a DVD. I did the subtitling myself on many movies (operas, actually) and never kept the original srt file (a text file). Now that DVDs have become cheap, I wish to use my subs on the DVD.
Please, help me. It's driving me mad, for I have searched and searched and found nothing.

Thanks a lot for the URL. But, it is of little help. I want to salvage my own subtitles to some Verdi's operas. It is unlikely to find them in the net (greek subtitles). Its very strange that there does not appear to be some software for converting winsubmux titles to format that can be imported to subripper.

Thanks again for trying to help. I am not interested in subtitles that can be downloaded from the internet; I only want to salvage my own. The stupid thing is that I did not keep the original srt files, for it never occured to me that I might wish to burn them in a DVD rather than a SVCD or CVD. In any case, I own the original DVDs, it is only about Italian operas and they have subtitles in other languages but, never in hellenic (greek). For some unknown to me reasons the companies that make them have all decided to ignore this language.
So, please, in case you or anyone else come across some program that can reverse the process, i.e., convert the SVCD or CVD subtitles to .srt or any other format, I shall be grateful.
By the way, I do not thing that CloneDVD can accept a separate subtitle stream and multiplex it to an existing movie. DVDauthor might do the job but, first one must Demux (demultiplex) the vobs.
In any case, I am not the right person to give advice, for I am but a novice.

Efharisto!
Thanks for the link, I'll look into it.
Solution found, at last!
It is not free, though.
Lemony subtitler does a perfect job out of it. I have only tried the crippled shareware version and had to replace the comma with a a colon or period in the original .sub file created by winsubmux and then do some search and replace in the output file. The result was excellent. I got a scenarist compatible file referring to the BMP images.
Lemony can be fount at

A better and FREE solution is to do the job "manually"
1. replace all comas with the help of any text editor
2. open the text file with microsoft excel
3. accept the default values when opening it
4 keep only the columns with the BMP names and the timing codes.
5 rearrange the columns so that you have first a row numbering column(you do that easily inserting a function, "row" its called, I think)
6. then you need an empty column, start time, empty column, end time, empty column and the name of the BMP.
7. You save it as a text file and then you change the suffix from txt to .sst
8.You open the thus created text file and add a header indicating the path to the BMP files
This is a header for PAL movies. You can use it but first change the path to where you have saved your BMPs
Everything should be in one row, mind you.
