i am about to buy a ps2 of a mate. It is probably not in the best of conditions and i want to play back ups on it. I dont knwo which option to go with. A Chip would be the easiest but i have absolutely no soldiering experience but am willing to give it a go but i dont wanna break the console. Also i dont have a dvd burner which can burn DVD9 so i wont be able to back them up. I am thinking aabout a hard drive but i am worried that it wont play certain games as i'vwe heard and i want to waste £70 if it doesnt play soem games. Swap magic seems a good option but i have heard it damages the laser. Which option do you think is the wy to go? Bear in mind this ps2 isnt in the best of condition and isnt slim.

do your research on both.
The chip is more expensive but can do more things
and is less of a hassle.

Swap magic will cost you less to start with and will
work if you also get a slidecard or fliptop. But will
not play any DVD9 games anyway so don't worry about that
if you get Swap magic.
The chip will play DVD9 if you get a good one
DMS4 (Lite, Pro, Or EZI) or Matrix Infinity

I would not try soldering the chip in yourself unless you
REALLY know what your doing. You could always get the
DMS4 EZI chip which is a solderless chip that will do
all the same things as the soldered in type.

With Swap Magic some games will have to be rebuilt or patched
with a chip you will not have to do that.
all games that you want to play online have to be patched
using either method.

The chips i listed have flash upgrades, which means you
download a file and burn it to a CD and play it in your PS2
and it will upgrade your chip with new features.
With Swap magic you will have to shell out money to buy
a new set of discs when they upgrade versions.

With a good chip you can load games from the hard drive
with no extra software like HD Advanced.

Look around the net and do some reading, on posts you will
get all kinds of answers based on opinios of what each
person likes.
I on the other hand have just stated facts.
I have both swap magic and flip top on my V7
and a slim PSTwo with a DMS4 Pro chip in it
I love the chip much more.
P.S. If you get a chip spend the extra $10 and get a laser fix
installed with it. (Comsoft V4 or Summone Laser Fix)

i would go with a hdd. i have a hdd with the ah advanced program. ot seems to work fine and i like it alot. i would recomend you get a hdd beucase it is easy to use and faily cheap...well not really its really expencive but i would still recomend it beucase it is the best option. for the hdd you dont have to soder anything so you have no change of breaking your ps2. with the hdd you may not be able to run some game but that is a sacrifice that i am willing to take but if you dont want to you can downgrade games that are DVD9 to dvd 5 using a software. i think that swap magic can do that but am not quite sure since i have never used it befor. well thats my opinion i hope that it helps
