Burning AVI files with subtitles

I bought myself a DIVX player so i dont have to go through the hassle of converting the films i have which are mostly divx,xvid files

Basically i was wanting to know how i would add the subtitles (which are srt files) to the films (i dont mind if they are permanent or not)

I use Nero to burn as a Data disk onto DVD-R disk and the avi files work no problem BUT i dont know how to add the subtitles.
I dont want to convert the avi files to DVD or any other format - i would prefer to keep the files as avi but just add the subtitles

If someone can please tell me how to do this and what software i will need i will appreciate it!

See the part about closing the wizard and using the File menu to save as
.avi

I use this all the time to "burn in" permanent subs when creating VCD/SVCD so it works if you tune TMPGEnc as shown in the guide.

Glad it worked for you. Replies like yours are so much nicer than being called a bunch of names with lots of syllables. Although the latter sometimes improves my vocabulary. :)

You got a player to avoid converting and now you are converting to add subs? Most players handle external srt's fine.

I know Celtic thats well ironic
I just have a habit of having subtitles - i understand english no problem and i can understand Bollywood films BUT i prefer having subtitles cos of habit!

You say most players should handle srt's? maybe its the way im burning them??

I basically use Nero 6, burn as a Data Disk, use a DVD-R, i just added the AVI files and the srt files onto Nero but it didnt work (NOT even my PC recognised it) i did burn 3 films tho which may have affected it

If the three films have completely different names, then it shouldn't be a problem. Some players I believe have problems parsing movie.CD1, etc. so that the subs don't work on the 2nd file.

If your srt's don't use standard characters or aren't ANSI then you will most likely have issues. For such cases VOBSub's or xsubs would probably be the way to go since they are bitmap based.

The films are split into 3 - so that is 6 files in total
The subtitles are for 2 of the films only - they are split into 2 aswell

Where can i get this xsubs thing from? i have tried searching for it but to no avail

xsub is the name of the official DivX subtitle format. All DivX certified players should play them back.

If the two parts add upto less than 2gigs you really should join them. For joining the subs you can use subtitle workshop.

Yeah the films are typically 1.37GB and are split into 2 parts (698MB each)

Also does this subtitle workshop allow me to convert srt's to xsubs?

Not as far as I know. It does allow you to join the two srt's though.

so celtic_d, you're saying you can just write a data DVD with correctly named .AVI and sub files and the DivX DVD Players will pick up the subs
like a PC software player? I don't have a DivX enabled Stand-alone yet so I'm curious.

Depends on the player. DivX specs don't require that a player support external subs. Also the support varies from player to player. Some will support more characters/lines and have a more readable font than others.

xsubs on the other hand should work on all DivX certified players and being bitmap based should be about as readable on any player as another.

Also subtitle support varies depending on the firmware. For instance for a fair few MTK based players there are hacked firmwares available, mostly focusing on subs.
