I'm only getting an average read speed of 1.4x.
my system specs are
dell xps generation 3
512 MB ram
intel 4 w/HT
80 GB
sony dru 800a 16x8x4x
please help

Make sure you are in dma mode and not pio mode. This will slow it down big time.

i checked and it is in dma if avaible mode, but then it says current transfer mode: IPO mode

To change the current mode to DMA you need to uninstall the drivers and reboot your computer. Windows will install the drivers again and transfer mode should be back at DMA

still no luck.
it says device 0 current transfer mode: ultra dma mode 2
device 1 current transfer mode: PIO mode

i tried the uninstall twice, on second try i switched device 1 to dma mode and then rebooted. but it went back to pio mode.
????
