I have Mac the Ripper... and to Rip a 6.77GB dvd it is taking me about an hour.

I was wondering... Does these seem about right? I feel like i should be able to do it faster. these are my computer specs.

Powerbook G4
MAC OS X 10.3.9
512 MB RAM

The time to rip a DVD is dependent on the DVD drive in use. Many drives come with firmware that limits the read time (riplock) on commercial dual layer DVD's. Through trial and error I have found that the best solution is an NEC-3520A in an external firewire case. I have flashed the stock firmware on the drive to remove the riplock and make it region free. I can rip an 8gb DVD in about 17 minutes. The single layer DVD's rip in about 6 minutes.

Is it true that when you try and remove the firmware, you risk damaging the dvd burner? And also... is there a way to remove the firmware from my superdrive that is in my Powerbook g4? I don't know what it is called, but POPCORN recognizes it as "Matshita" -- does that sound right?

If there isn't a risk of damaging your drive then i'l do it.... but i heard there was a risk... and i rather not.

mashita dvdr drives are the ones that one in the apple systems.
mashita cdrw/dvd rom is the basic one.
that's what my mac mini came stock with..

as far as flashing goes.. sometimes there is a risk of "flashing" a drive. you are correct... you may damage it.. but as long as you get the correct directions you can do it without an issue.

can you point me in the right direction of some instructions? The RIGHT instructions? Will this help me achieve faster speeds with burning a dvd with imovie? with video that has NOTHING to do with commercial dvd?
