Which is better and why?

Also, have given up on trying to correct an audio video sync issue with one movie - Dr. Divx gives me the best result over all others. Anyway, why would one movie have such a problem?

Honestly, I don't see a difference. I use them both and they both look fine. It's all about the user and what they feel is best for them. I don't see anything signiftcantly different about the two like comparing VHS & DvD.

i'v heared from my cousin that DivX is the codec that a factory has made and no other people could change it and it will never be changed again (except when that factory change them). The codec XviD is made by freaky pc people and is still changing, so it's still getting better and better. That's why XviD is the best ^^. Now, don't slap me when this information is wrong, but i'v heard this version of the history :)

Both are still being developed, but yes XviD's development has slowed down somewhat the last few months.

I don't think so either. I know so. It is a point of fact that XviD's cvs has not been updated much lately. It you look back to earlier this year or last year I was doing a minimum of probably 3 XviD builds a month. I don't think I did one at all last month as the code simply hadn't been updated.

It is true however that DivX is closed source. As such it is only updated when DXN update it.

XviD on the other hand is open source, so anyone can update it so in theory it will never die. That is as long as there are people willing to work on it.

XviD I think still offers more ASP features and more control.
Also don't forget that XviD and DivX are not the only ASP MPEG-4 video codecs and therefor not the only options. In fact since I don't think anyone mentioned standalone players that really increases the number of codec possibilities.
