Hello, I'm hoping someone here can provide me with some direction and maybe even some insight. I hope this is the right thread and I appologize if it is not; please point me in the direction that my questions would be better suited.

I'll start off with what I'm trying to accomplish. I recent built a HTPC running Windows Media Center. I have digitized (for lack of a better word) all of my CD music into an online library that is accessible from my new HTPC. Now I would like to do the same for my movies. This brings me to my big question.

Whats the best method for backing up DVD's to a hard drive (I want the best quality video and audio, preferably no more compression than the original DVD movie)?

I've looked at several different DVD ripping guides and DVD backup guides and none seem to pertain to what I want to do. I tried the DVD2DVDR stuff with DVD shink and that works great but the movie has to go back to a DVDR and there is a noticeable video quality loss from what I've seen. The other thing I've read about and tried was the DVD2AVI stuff, which all seems to be focused on getting the movie small enough for a CD or 2 and thats not what I want either. This process is also long and tedious and it just seems to me there has to be a better way. I've also seen some threads where people try to merge the .vob files into one big one and then give the file a .mpg extension, but that doesn't seem to work for most.

Can anyone assist me with this?

Basically I don't care if the ending file is .mpg, .avi or any other video format. I just want it playable in Windows Media Player (or similar video player) and have the closet to orginal quality as possible. I would even like it to work like the original DVD if possible with menus and all, but I can settle for just the main feature and its DD 5.1 or DTS sound.

Well if your just going to put it on your HD, use DVD Shrink and do movie only.

Thanks for the quick response. By HTPC, I mean Home Theater PC, running Windows Media Center. I've tried the DVDShink right to my HD but most dvd's have each chapter as a .VOB file and no matter what program I use to view it (Windows Media or PowerDVD) the movie just stops once it gets to the end of the .VOB file. If I merge them all into one .VOB, do I loose the chapter selection feature? I would really like that to work like a DVD which is another reason I'm not hype on converting them to .AVI files.

Well PowerDVD plays Video_TS files and that's what you'll have once Shrink is done. You open the whole video_ts file.

And you say you want it to work like a normal dvd. Does that mean you want working menus?

For absolute best quality .. just use DVD Decrypter. Rip in file mode. Keep in mind that your HD space will fill up quickly.
