I'm new to this site but have been using the knowledge and expertise found here to successfully use DVD shrink for about 10 months to back up Movies. At present I have backed up about 280 movies for my library. I have had a few problems in the past but seemed to get through them with the info from you more savvy dudes. Starting several weeks ago, my burn speed with my Plextor PX 712A internal burner starts out with 8X burn speed but within a minute or so it has slowed to 2X where it finishes the DVD sucessfully. I have been using Sonic 1-4X -R media since I started burning backups. I have tryed several other types and speeds of media including Phillips, Teon and other "Bargin" media mostly from "Shop4tech.com and Staples.......I had some luck with this problem using a restore point from a known good burn speed era, but within a week or so the slow burn time problem reoccured. Now the restore points from that known good era have been replaced by new restore points and thet don't help.
I feel the media is OK since I tryed other brands and speeds. I uninstalled then re-installed the Plextor Burner and that did not help. It is installed as the slave (whether or not that makes a difference)since I didn't know any differently when I installed it in Oct. 04. I am not on that computer right now where the burner is installed, but can provide a few specs on that system. 2004 E Machine, 2.6 MHZ Celleron, 80 Gig. Western Digital HD (50 gig. Free), Cd/DVD rom combo, and Plextor PX 712A, 512meg Ram. I have read the threads on this and other sites and used some of the info to set up the proper parameters, but have not had much sucess.
I have on occasion had problems with DVD 3.2 Shrink with very long encoding times (2 hours) but everything seems to be normal right now. I have installed AVG antivirus software recently and found a few things, and it seems that the encoding is normal for now. I turn off the Anti virus software when burning. I know that this is a long thread but I wanted to provide as much info in this initial post as I could. Hope you have some thoughts, and thanks for anything you might suggest.
Give me a roll of duct tape and I can fix anything !!!
