Well, if you have an early dvd that is a single layer, you can use DVD Decrypter to rip the movie (ISO READ), then burn the dvd in ISO WRITE mode. Single layer dvds contains 4.36 GB of space, despite what the labels say.
Nowadays, 99.9% of dvds are dual or double layered. Meaning the disc holds approximately 8.5 GBs of space on one side. (There are 8.5 GBs blanks dvds, but they're 4.36 on each side) You'll need a double layered burner to back-up these kinds of movies, if you want a 1:1 copy.
There are programs out there that can compress movies that are dual layered and let you burn onto single layered discs.
One of the most popular ways to do this is to rip the dual layered dvd using DVD Decrypter, then using DVD Shrink to compress. If you have Nero, Shrink could use Nero or DVD Decrypter to burn the movie.

Thanks guys/gals. I'll give that a try. It's a shame still though that it takes this much grief just to back something up like this... I mean, although ripping the DVD and then burning is basically pretty simple; still too much effort in my opinion.
So what you guys are saying is that for the basic or standard DVD, all that is required of me is to basically rip the files off the disc, and burn onto the disc what I ripped? Is this correct? And that program "DVD Decryptor" will do this?
