Please help! I have made backup copies of most of my DVD collection (87 copies in all)using the following 3 step method method: 1)DVD Decrypter to remove the protection, 2)DVD Shrink to encode and compressed the files to single-layer size, and 3)the DVD Decrypter again to burn the copy. It has never failed me (1 or 2 problems, but I could handle those). Now, without any changes to the programs, and using the same media (Philips DVD-R blanks), when I go to step 3 DVD Decrypter announces to me that it is "unable to recover TOC". I have tried 5 different DVD's in the process, and the results are the same. The writer seems to be fine. I have un-installed and re-installed both Shrink and Decrypter, with the same results. I have even re-installed my OS (XP Pro) twice with no change. Windows recognizes the DVD drive, as does the BIOS. What's up? DOES ANYONE KNOW????

Thanks Alkaline1, but I've read all the strings here, and though their problems generate the same error message, I have used my method of burning copies on this machine many times before without a problem. I don't believe in working around a problem. I think the actual problem should be identified and solved. The actual problem is: Why, all of a sudden does DVD Decrypter have a problem recovering the TOC? Is the TOC not being written into the decoded files? If that were the case, new installations of DVD Decrypter and Shrink should have solved that problem. I don't know how this is possible. Anyone, PLEASE HELP!!!

How much free space do your have available on your hard drive?
Have you done a defragment recently?
Have you tried some decent media? - Phillips not the best
Have you done a clean install or merely installed over the top?

Hi Colw, and thank you for trying to help. My hard drive has over 25GB free space, I defragment weekly, I have used Philips sucessfully 87 times in a row (although I haven't tried other media), and as far as installations go, if you mean DVD Decrypter and Shrink, yes the old was uninstalled, and fresh copies were installed. If you mean my OS, that was over the old files. I believe the DVD-ROM is not reading my blank DVD's anymore, and that is why DVD Decrypter is generating the error message. If I put a blank in and click on the Drive's icon, I get a Windows error message that says, "Disk is not formatted". Could I have a bad batch of blank DVD's?

Some possibility of a bad batch but not highly likely if they have worked previously - worth trying some better quality stuff such as Verbatim/TY etc.
Do you always use Decrypter to burn? Have you tried other programs such as Nero?
Have you checked your Device manager to ensure that you are still in DMA mode and not PIO?
You could try uninstalling your cd/dvd drives and letting Windows reinstall then on reboot.
Try bypassing your ROM drive and reading and writing from your burner instead.

Is this by any chance a new batch of phillips media? Phillips like memorex, buy from the lowest bidder and there's a good chance of getting some garbage made by cmc mag and you never know what you're going to get from batch to batch. Use this free proggy http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/ and give us the manufacturer and ID of your discs.

Hey Nick,
Thanks, but my DVD-ROM won't read blanks, and since your little program use the ROM to access info, I can't get anything!!! Error message says: "Can't initialize disc, can't read TOC, Sub Code etc." (I put the "etc." in!)
