This is a weird one. Three times now, I have downloaded a file from Kazaa that Win98 cannot read. That is, the file finishes downloading, I exit Kazaa, then I open Windows Explorer. Then, when I open the directory which contains the file, Win98 freezes.

I have to go out to DOS just to delete the file. DOS sees the file, and reads its name right, and can delete it. However, DOS cannot rename the file -- DOS just freezes then.

The file names are not super-long. I have noticed that each of these file names have included the underscore (_) character. However, I have many files which include that character that do not freeze the system.

I have ran a virus-scan on these files, and no viruses were detected.

Help! These are super-neat files, if I could open them. Any ideas on what's going on here?

here i am, replying to myself, but i did find a way around this problem, at least with the first file (haven't tried the other 2 yet).

fire up win98 in SAFE MODE by doing Shut Down / Restart and then holding down the "Ctrl" key till the DOS screen comes up, then pick Safe Mode. For some reason, in this pared-down state of mind, Windows Explorer went ahead and dealt with the file, which turned out to be a "Solid SFX RAR Archive." I have used WinRAR before, but maybe this is some new super-breed of RAR file?

Anyway, I was able to un-RAR the archive, and was happy with what I got. If I need to compress it back down I guess I will use WinZIP.

I'd still be curious to hear from anyone who has any experience with this glitch.

I've had the same problem in the past, I'm running win98se too... and safe mode is a good quick fix! most of the problem that I have found with mine was cross referanced files, the person zipping them up with their own sys filles included, and invalid short cuts... I ran spybot search and destroy, set up to find reg and sys problems. seemed to fix it pretty good. (don't run it if you have the normal version of kazaa with out the cd_clint.dll or kazaa will not be usable)
