I'm thinking about buying a DVD recorder, but then I thought whats the point, if I want to record TV Programs I could just buy a VHS recorder at a fraction of the price.

In addition if I want to watch different formatted DVDs I could just buy a region free DVD player at a fraction of the price also. I suppose its just a personal preference.

Maybe I answered my own question but anybody have some reasons why I might want to buy a DVD recorder?

Well sure you can use a VHS tape, but buy a sufficant quantity of tapes and get another VHS recorder with parts as a spare. In a very short time a lot of stores won't be carring very many if any VHS tape. By mail rentals are all DVD. I have a sony BataMax, NO tape. I have a high quality 8 track audio recorder. and a whole box of unused 8 track tape. The tapes are most likely worth more than the recorder.
All this doesn't consider the much higer quality of DVD.
You say buy a region free DVD recorder. You better get one now if you can. Most need to be hacked. If they can be
Good Luck

If we talk about functionality between the two. I find searching a recording on DVD much quicker than VHS.
The quality is usually better than VHS (TV recording I mean)
Editing is easier.
The shelf life of your recording is longer
A dvd player can't destroy your media.
Discs need less shelf space.

Need you ponder any longer.
Just pay attention to the format of disc the machine uses and try and get a multi-format one preferably with a Hard drive in it.
