Hiya!

I've been lurking on these forums quite a bit in an attempt to resolve my problem, however nothing really touched on what I was experiencing minus perhaps the occasional "Which DVD's should I use?" thread.

To set the scene: I have a PS2 Model SCPH 39002, a Swap Magic version 3.6, my PS2 is a few years old and we live in quite a dusty environment. I use Princo DVDs currently, as they are the cheapest. I am willing to change.

Having burned both Suikoden 3 and Silent Hill 4 I have noticed that during certain scenes, it skips to all hell, and after a while it gets better. An example is in Suikoden 3: the intro movie constantly skipped and occasionally timed out (went straight to the login screen), but after 5 to 10 playthroughs it got less skippy and ran with very few hiccups. So I would approach random FMV sequences throughout the game and come across an FMV and it would skip to match the intro sequence. I wouldn't get the opportunity to save so I would end up not seeing it. All the time making whirring noises.

So I take the game around to a friends, and the game doesn't skip at all! WTF! The friend has the same model number and lives in a relatively dust free environment.

Now I've heard a variety of things: Swap Magic screws PS2's, dusty environment means the lens needs cleaning, switch brands, etc etc. Now I want to take it to you guys; the know-hows, in order to best make my next decision without wasting any coin. There are so many variables I do not know where to start.

Thanks for reading guys!
Hope I can absorb some of your intelligence! ;D

Oh I forgot to add it runs fine during regular gameplay, just those particularly "heavy" moments.

Have you tried cleaning your laser with some alcohol and a swab? If not give it a try and see how you go from there.

I'm a bit apprehensive about touching the lens as I understand it is quite sensitive.

Perhaps if you could provide some information about how cautiously I should go about doing it and any things to avoid... sure. :D

I was recommended one of those CD cleaners with the brushes, but I got a friend who swore in all caps never to do it. Then the guy who recommended that withdrew his comment because his Ps2 started acting up.

princo's are not the best for ps2's,
get yourself some decent media like verbatim's/maxwell's/ritek go4,you will notice the difference straight away
and burn at X 4
try cleaning the disks you have with furniture polish and a lint free cloth
i have had my ps2 for a few years now,and it has had some hammering,
and i have never had to clean the laser,...i am not saying this is not causing you a problem, but i am just stating the laser is something i never bother about to be honest, although it wont do you any hram in cleaning it...use a cotton swab dipped in alcohol
if ever i get skipping/slow loading its always down to the media,a bad disk from a batch

Okay, you've all definitely provided something of value. :)

I'll give the media a shot first, try to pinch a cotton swab and clean the discs too.

The strange part was that the same disc did fine at my friends but not at my house. That's why I tot it was dust.

And 4x? I thought you were meant to use a lower burning speed! ;p

Anything else I should know? I dunno how to really access the lens... -_-
