Formatting a DVD+RW

Am i right in thinking that DVD+RWs are automatically formatted when you write on them?

If this is the case, does it mean that the first time you burn to the disc, you have to write the full capacity, otherwise the space doesn't get formatted?

If it's not the case, and you need to format before you can write, how is this done?

I did a quick forum search and i noticed a few people have asked but couldn't find any replies that fully answered the questions i have.

I'm using nero. With a Philips DVD +rw. Nero software burns the disc regardless if it 0 to no more than 4.7G. Disc is automatically formatted upon insertion. it takes approx 5-15 secs to format the disc. Unlike the CDR-RW's.

They are not automatically formated. I f your program doesn't format them (Nero does) go into my computer and right click on you DVD+RW drive and click the format option

i did quick erase with nero and now when i try to use alcohol it says no blank disc so i went to my computer but it identifies the disc as 0 of 0 bytes...... no option to format
