are you talking about backup music cd's or backup game cd's.

since it plays original games. and not backups, it could be the laser is getting week.
try:

backup movie dvd
bacup game cd
backup game dvd
if non of these play, but the originals of all of these play, then
it sounds like the laser is getting weak to me.

Hey John, man i've been having the exact same problem with my ps2, i can play cd back-ups, and all original games and movies, but my ps2 won't read any of my dvd back-ups (i havnt tried back movies dvd yet so i dont know). If anybody knows how to fix this problem please post. If not im gonna try cleaning and re-calibrating my laser using this guide i found:

http://www.exploitstation.com/index.php?page=ps2repair

ill keep you updated if it works

If you were using bargain bin DVD-Rs, then your laser is probably starting to die. You can try one of those laser tweak guides that has you rotating some potentiometers, but that will only accelerate the decay process. Almost all PS2s will do this. Make sure you use good media, burn slowly, and handle your discs carefully so they don't get fingerprints and scratches.

I used the guide earlier stated and it worked perfectly, my ps2 reads all the discs it used to again (i only cleaned and fixed the tilt of my laser) and i'd reccommend it to anyone having this problem

it does take some time to do it rite so u have to be patient
