I ripped the DVD to my hard drive with DVDdecrypter so it came out in VOB IFO and BUP files... total was about 6.5gb (seems kind of large?). After that I went into Auto Gordian Knot, chose File Input and pointed it at the first VOB file, which was VTS_01_0.VOB. Then I set it to a custom size of 1,200mb (which is just an arbitrary number because I have no idea what a good size would be...), left audio and subtitles alone and told it to start. All I want to do is have copies of my DVDs on my hard drive in a manageable size (~1,000mb or less preferably), is this the fastest and most efficient way of doing this or is there a better way? Also, what size should I tell AutoGK to make the output file? I put in 1,200 but now that I think about it something like 800 - 900 seems like it should work just fine.

Edit: one more question ;) would DVD shrink be helpful at all with this process?

If you want a copy of such size (1000-1200 MB) I suggest to make mpeg-1 movies (10 MB per minute), 1200 GB for 2h movies.
After all, VCD movies aren't so bad, since the input quality is so high. I couldn't distinguish on my TV among a DVD and a VCD ripped from it using the method contained in our guide.

DVD Shrink is useful if you want to fit a dual layer DVD image into a single layer DVD , not to reduce to much the size of a movie (4.7 GB is 4 times what you want to get).

Otherwite, you can make SVCD movies [http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/dvd2svcd_with_tmpgenc.cfm] (considering about 2400 bytes, though).

These methods don't have loss of quality more than the resolution.

Otherwise, use a good codec, compress the movie to AVI and cross your fingers...

Do not use that guide, takes too long, use this excellent guide, in which with a 2.8 processor have EXCELLENT quality movies (2 hours in length usually) in under 4 hours.

1.4 GB would be ideal for a 2 hour or over movie, 900 Mb for anything less.

well it is possible to get a movie down to atleast 700mb using autoGk with the XviD encoder, dvdshrink is very useful, all i do is use shrink to rip the main movie off the dvd and go into autogk and use Dgindex to create a d2v file for all the VOB files ripped from the dvd, them load the d2v into autogk, i use a 2 pass encode for better quality and it helps me to reach my target size which usually 700 to 900 mb.
