Alright, here's the deal. I don't believe this PS2 has ever been opened. I bought it from a friend who I trust, the warranty sticker is still in place.
I installed the Independence exploit, and have been using it along with a 120GB HDD for some time now. The PS2 occasionally had a hard time reading the PS1 game, but it would only give me a DRE maybe once or twice before it loaded it.
My friend brought over Fight Night 2 (original, pressed DVD), which we played for about 2 hours. When we were done, I pressed and held the power button on the PS2 until it turned off and the red light came on.
Now, a few days later, the PS2 will not spin discs at all. I can put _any_ form of media into the PS2, press the eject button, the tray will close, and nothing happens. No spinning, no laser moving, no clicking, nothing.
The PS2 goes straight to the browser screen as if there was no disc inserted at all. Does anyone know what happened to my PS2, and can it be fixed?
If ur ps2 isnt making any clicking noises or anything u shouldnt have a bad laser. I had one of these problems before. What u have to do is open up ur ps2 and lokk at ur ps2 laser. On the left side of the laser u should see a small screw, try adjusting it with a screw driver and see if ur ps2 will read the discs now.
Alright, on further inspection, while on the browser screen where you can see your memory card, when I insert any form of media, the words "reading disc" will appear at the bottom of the screen for a very breif time, about 3/4 of a second, then disappear. Hopefully this is a clue as to what is going on.
I'd rather not have to open up the PS2 because:
1) I destroyed another PS2 by trying to install a chip, bad experience
2) I have a skin on the PS2, I'd have to remove the side skin or cut it.
If there is a way to resolve this without opening the ps2 up, I'd love to know about it, but I will do whatever I have to get it working.
I had the same problem....and all I did to fix it was flip it on its side....apperently the track the laser runs on sets after a wile so it moves down a lil bit..and if your laser is already week it will have a hard time working. but if you turn it on its side it moves the laser closer to the disc and makes it easer on the laser.
also I have been told that if you leave a disc in your ps2 even when its in standby mode with the red light it is still reading the disc and the motor is still spinning...did you leave the game in the ps2 when you were done using it?(not sure if this is true or not)
Well, I went home for lunch, and tried turning the PS2 on its side. I managed to get a DRE! This is (ironically) an imporovement.
I kept getting DREs, then I reset the console, and it loaded the disc!
So, now my questions are:
What could I have done to cause such a degredation in performance to my laser overnight like that? If anyone knows how to make my PS2 play games while in the horizontal position again, I would love to hear that as well.
as I said, if you left your laser reading the disc all night that might be your problem...but as I said I dont no if that is true....glad turning it on its side worked for you...
anyone no if its true that the laser continues to read even when its in standby?.....My dad just read this post over my sholder and said that it is true....and he is an engineer and has 20 years of repair experiance.

Um...I don't think leaving your disc in the machine will cause the laser to read. Standby mode means everything is shutdown accept for a small amount of power is running to keep the date, time, or even the standby light (red light), but it is not enough power to power the laser to read. I'm not saying your dad is wrong, just in my opinion.
Usually this happened when either you have a loose cables, power supply is getting too hot, or the motor to spin the disc is burned. There are many possibilities, but try something and hope that it works.
