If you would like a good alternative to WinAVI (I've used it as well) that combines both speed and quality, then my suggestion would be Mainconcept.

I logged in on March 1st 2005, and it's incredible to believe that in so short time I've learnt all that I know about DVDs from this forum...

"Best" is subjective.
So far you've been using amateurish tools, and getting amateurish results.
Try Canopus Procoder, Mainconcept (as mentioned above) or even TMPGEnc. CCE with avisynth gives excellent results too, but the learning curve is far too steep for most, and not worth the effort IMHO, when Canopus, MC or TMPGEnc give comparable results.
With the right settings (depending on source) you can get DVD quality video out.

Black holes are where God divided by zero...
Cheers, Jim

Just over a month ago I used TMPGEnc Plus and DVD Author to make my movies.I thought it was a good. But then I read about CCE.1-3 days later I was all ready encoding with CCE SP 2.5 and Its way faster and quality is great. And the ability to do multi passes is great.CCE plus DVDLABPRO is the way to go...Even if your a noob just look for some tuts to get your feet weat.
