Here's a link for checking and enabling dma mode:
http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/checking%20DMA.pdf

As for the power calibration error - probably due to the media being used but here's Nero's suggestions:
* Update the firmware of your recorder. Please check the manufacturer's website for the latest version.
* Try another brand of media.
* Try different power connectors, and for recorders, do not share power with other devices. It needs its own power connector. If the error occurs with an external recorder, the power source in the chassis could be the cause. As a test, try to take the recorder out of the external chassis and connect it internal.
* Try different configurations, such as taking the CD-ROM to the primary IDE bus as slave and have only the recorder connected to the secondary IDE bus as master.
* Send the recorder in for service.
Make sure you using quality media like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim DataLifePlus

If his PC has Intel's Application Accelerator installed, it will hide the Advanced tab so you can't check or change the PIO/DMA mode setting. Even though Intel says the DMA setting is the default, I like to see it for myself. So uninstall that App Accelerator, then remove the burner from the hardware list. When you reboot, it should say New Hardware Found and will automatically reinstall the burner drivers. Then you should see the Advanced tab again and be able to select DMA manually.

In addition to other guys' replies -

get your friend to post LAST section of Nero log, which is in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log, but DO NOT post serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar.

- if your friend isn't on the internet you can save logfile onto a floppy disk or a usb stick. and i'm guessing some stuff is gonna be out of date with no internet. but let's see what the logfile says.

thanks for all your help guys, really appreciated!
ive also noticed he has his burner as slave but his dvd rom drive is set to "c" surely this cant be right?
should he have burner as master and hooked up to the end of the cable and dvd rom drive as slave hooked up to the middle of the cable?
ill make sure he does all the other things you have suggested aswell!

creaky
ive done everything you advised, installed aspi, updated nero and still no joy!
i think its the "dma" thing thats causing all the probs, but i cant seem to enable it,its set to pio and it wont give me the option to change it!im guessing its this cause my pc is setup exactly the same as his, apart from mine is set to dma!any more suggestions are very welcome.thanks

hi

basically if the drive is on 1 eide cable with another drive (2 drives sharing 1 cable) then you need to set master on 1 and slave to the other!

look at the back of the drive unit, you will see a little plug type jumper (jumper arks across 2 pins to make a contact = switch) and hopefully a sticker on the unit saying which position is master or slave, and there is usually a CS position cable select but leave that alone!

Hi there,

If you are married:

Your wife is the master, and your the slave :)

That's how it works :)

When you get that DMA problem fixed, several problems will/should go away !
