There things called memorycard exploits, don't know if that's like the types of softmods on the xbox, but you might wanna check it out anyway.

softmods are a esier almost fully functional modchip without a modchip. playing backups and saving games to hdd and emulaters. i think it only supports the hdd that is installed,which means you cant install one yourself for more space with a hell of a time. Like Daniel_G said exploits are asclose as the ps2 comes to softmodding.
