I have many old vhs movie tapes that we bought for many years. I want to convert to DVD's because sooner or later vhs tapes fail to work. I was able to convert some of the vhs movies to DVD's but some would not get past my camcorder. I called Cannon and they said they had to put something in the camcorder that would prevent switching vhs to dvd and they would not tell me what to do to bypass this so called feature. Does anyone know if there is some sort of on/off switch on the camcorder to allow all vhs movies to pass through the camcorder so that I can put it on a dvd.

Thanks for any help

Well any VHS Tapes that are Retail VHS tapes will Probably have Macrovision Copy protection which your camcorder will detect and then prevent you from Transfering the Video to your PC.....

The only way to Bypass this Probles is to get a Video stabilizer which will remove the Copy protection and allow you to Transfer the Video to your PC....

I don"t know if this is your Problem but I though I would Mention it as it is a Possible Cause...

I have what I think is a similar problem. I am in the middle of transferring my English VHS tapes to DVD. I'm using a VCR which converts the tape's PAL format to NTSC and then running the NTSC output through my Canon camcorder (to convert analogue to digital) and into my PC and then burning a DVD. This has worked well for the majority of the tapes but now I've come to tapes where this does not work. When I set the VCR to Play, the cature application works for 10 seconds or so and then the camcorder screen shows the following message - "COPYRIGHT PROTECTED. DUBBING RESTRICTED" and the video capture stops.

Will a video stabilizer between the VCR and the camcorder eliminate this problem or is there anything else I can do? Also any recommendations for which stabilizer (cheap if possible as I only have 6 or 7 tapes left to do)?

Thanks for the reply

I figured it was some sort of copy protection. But I was hoping that someone may know how to make a change on the camcorder (Cannon ZR 85) to allow these tapes to go through without the use of some sort of video stabilizer. I was able to transfer most of my VHS tapes and only have a small number left to transfer. If the video stablilizer is the only solution, I guess i need to know the one that has quality but would be economical at the same time, since it will probably collect dust after a short time of use.

Thanks for any help
