PLEASE HELP WITH sony 500uL and ritek

i tryed useing ritek dvd-r with my sony 500UL but every time it burns it only goes to 1% then its stops and it keeps saying

ILLEGAL MEDIUM
COULD NOT PERFORM START DISC AT ONCE

and i'm useing the latetes firmware 10g please help me what i'm i doing worng

I have the same problem with Ritek DVD-R 1X media that I bought in a 100 spindle. However, I am amazed that I have read so often of users having success with these. I have upgraded firmware on my Sony 500UL. No problems with Ritek DVD+RW. I am wondering if the machine is flakey to DVD-R media even though it advertises compatibility with all 4 formats. Please advise if you have success with the DVD-R or hear anything. Expensive business... isn't it?

I'm using the RITEK 2x doublesided disks DVD-R and they seem to be working so far. And I have the SONY DRU-500A with the f firmware.
