VCR tapes to VCD or DVD ?

I can make VCDs and DVDs from my digital camera. Now I want to transfer some 6 hour VCR tapes taken from TV (rabbit ears) to DVD . Obviously the quality isn?t the best. I assume VCD quality is adequate. I plan to connect a VCR to puter and capture via my ATIAIW video card. I prefer to put them on DVD (and add some clips from my DV camcorder) to get more content than possible with VCD. I have both Nero and Pinnacle. My questions :
1. Considering the lower quality what format and resolution can (should ) I capture with ?
2. Will I be able to edit (trim beginning and end) each half hour recording with that format?
3. Will I be able to insert AVI clips (taken from a DV camcorder?
