My laptop can encode to Nero main profile asp in just about real-time, but using Xvid via AutoGK takes 4X realtime. I'm I doing something wrong ? Is this the penalty for not learning to do it the hard way?

What settings? XviD is more tuned for quality than speed. Ateme from the beginign tuned for speed, although I believe recently they have worked on improving quality.

With XviD if you disable/enable/turn down, etc. certain options you can increase speed (at the expense of quality).

That said if you like Nero, just stick with that.

Thanks for the reply, and the vote of confidence for Nero ASP. I've been wanting to try their AVC codec, so I installed Nero Digital, but the only upgrade that left me with is a nag box for the upgrade to the retail version of my OEM version.
Anyway, I was using all the default settings that come with AutoGK and the XviD codec. I don't really have the background to work on the advanced techniques, but I was impressed with the playback, even without using any filters. I guess there isn't much reason to mess with it if Nero ASP is working for me. I'm using "cinema profile", two-pass, with mpeg quantization; I stay aroungd 2.5 Mbps. I would like to know more about the concept of "frame serving" though.
It does bother me that XviD is known as a "fast" encoder, but I don't seem to be able to configure it. Is that the problem with using something like AutoGK? Is there any access to the codec itself outside of AutoGK.

Well Nero (Ateme) has always had a rep for speed with their ASP codec. Far more so than XviD.

Not used autoGK myself, but as far as I know, no it doesn't give you direct access to XviD's settings. It is designed for people who don't know what they are doing and therefor will probably just change stuff that they shouldn't.
