when i put a disc into my ps2, the ps2 makes scratching sounds then i get the disc read error. im thinking its my laser thats dead, i dunno if thats it but im making sure.

it doesnt read dvds, cds, games; nothing.

is it the laser or is it something else?

if it is a clicking/grinding noise, then most likely it is the laser gear that moves the laser along the worm gear. mine is plastic, so it wears easily, the later versions i think changed to metal. it is common for these to ride on top of the worm gear making a noise. thus, the laser is not moving and no games can be read. if you find out that this is the problem, then either get a new one or bend down that piece so it fits on the worm motor more tightly.
