in the guide it says to down mix the audio to get a vcd that works well on pc's but whats the ultimate settings for a disk done for a stand alone player or do you just have to use these setting any way

You should always downmix the audio to 44.1kHz for VideoCDs. As far as I can remember, the VideoCD standard specifies the audio track at 44.1kHz, stereo, max 224kbps.

Hi there i really need some help. I have copied my dvd's to my hard drive okay but i have .vob files when i convert them to .avi i lose the sound is there anything anyone could help me with please.

Where do you lose the audio? Check out the DVD to DivX guide at:

Note that the audio is not included in the .d2v or pseudo avi. DVD2AVI decodes the audio into a separate WAV file.

more help please
if i want to create an svcd is there any where i can find the settings for dvd2avi and tmpgenc or are they the same as vcd thanks again.

Yes, the procedure is pretty much the same. With SVCD you have the option of using variable bitrate instead of constant bitrate, so you can squeeze in more video per disc while maintaining the high quality.

ok so in tmpgenc i obviously use the svcd templates next question is ive got some other templates in the file vcd1246kbpspal and also a one that says unlock any ideas what these are for

The VCD template in question uses higher bitrate for video and lower bitrate for audio, than the standard VCD template. That is, you compromise audio quality in favour of video quality.

The unlock template is used for unlocking the settings (eg. bitrate) locked by the other templates. Ie. when you load the SVCD template the resolution, aspect ratio etc. settings are grayed out. You can unlock these with the unlock template.
