I have a lg DVDRAM GSA-4163B burner and ive tried different media and i still cant figure out wats not letting me burn. With this media its set to 16x and i cannot at all burn any lower, nero wont let me change it. Can anyone help me figure out wats wrong plz ..This is my last attempt on afterdawn, after that im deleting my membership (no one replys :( ) any help is appreciated. Im at my witts end now. thank you
(ps. i know my firmware is outta date but in 2 months i have not had one person help me figure out how to update it... even after asking all over different forums.. so, cant do it if i dont know how..and i have been to the site to update it so plz dont post it..thnx)

thnx creaky..no one was replying at all so i stayed off of afterdawn.. i thought id try 1 more time. I was able to burn 2 movies and then right back to the way it was. I know my firmware needs an update thats why i said ...****(ps. i know my firmware is outta date but in 2 months i have not had one person help me figure out how to update it... even after asking all over different forums.. so, cant do it if i dont know how..and i have been to the site to update it so plz dont post it..thnx)****... because thats all anyone posts..they dont post how to do it exactly. Things have to be shutoff and im afraid of leaving something on.
Now i know the memory is an issue and i have been shutting everything off when i burn. Im wondering if its something to do with the bios and how the burner was setup. the burner is set to master but is the computer correctly recognizing it. Now that i finally got the device mananager to recognize the ide cables finally (i will never uninstall them again!!!!!!!!!!!!!) im wondering if something happened when they were uninstalled. this burner is holding me back pretty badly and i need it desperately.. its a part of how i make a living. any help is appreciated..this is a tough one. thnx
ps i cant uninstall roxio i produce slideshows and i use that program.. i have it on my secondary drive i believe so i didnt think it would be that much of a problem

you might be able to get around it .I have 2 drives .Ones 80 gig and is windows 2k the other is 160 gig and winxp.For all purposes the computer thinks that they are 2 separate machines and there fore you need to load your drivers twice and assume that they are 2 separate machines.When you start your pc you have the option of choosing which operation system you wish to run.
The only prob is with roxio you will find that it will conflict with every other program you have installed.Have you considered changing the program to something more friendly like windows movie maker and powerpoint.You can do slideshows with them

nahh im halfway thru 2 shows.. and i cant burn them cause of the burner...
now i did go update the firmware and ive tried 3 burns on nero...all of them have burned black. :S I burned once on alcohol and its pixelated

Hi all,
I have some questions and some suggestions if you don't mind.
All I sea is CD/RW are you burning CD's OR DVD's and what brand are they ?
Next, you have to free up some memory. Go to Start, Run, type in "msconfig", then click on the startup tab. Select Disable all, Apply, OK, then OK to reboot your PC.
Now when you begin to burn, all of your memory will be free to us as long as you don't touch your PC for any reason. No surfing, no emails, no printing NOTHING AT ALL ! ! !
What are the type of files you are trying to burn ?
Are they downloads or rips from a DVD ?
Lastly, select the Firmware and download it. Install it on your C:\ Drive and open it there. The only thing to lQQk for is ~ make sure it is the firmware listed for your drive and not something you don't have.

"WHOAH there partner, I didn't say I wanted to get rid of Nero ~" No, you didn't. BUT if you had Nero on your PC along with Roxio then Nero almost assuredly has a corrupted file or 3. Just in case, so matters don't go "downhill," let's get everything up and running and in perfect shape. To do so, let's do a "CLEAN UNINSTALL" with Nero and then install it in perfect condition.
You say you have Roxio. Roxio is, IMO, the worst program you can have on your PC if you wish to work with DVD Video. It does it's best to trash almost every other DVD backup proggy there is except DVD Shrink. One extremely good program, Nero, is one that Roxio messes with the most. True there are a very few pple who have them both on their PC BUT by far, the vast majority of pple who have had them both on their PC's have had major headaches and have had to get rid of Roxio. As I'm sure any search through our threads will show you it's a wise decision. Even getting rid of Roxio is a problem as it weaves itself all through your system and you require a special proggy to get rid of it even after you've uninstalled it.
We're here because you've probably had trouble burning that can be traced to our archenemy Roxio CD-Creator or one of his henchmen.
The best way to rid our selves of Roxio is remove him through "Control Panel", then select "Add and Remove Programs".
After you've done that, I'm thinking you haven't gotten all of Roxio, actually you haven't, you need to run this -
Remove all types of Roxio tentacles and tendrils with Roxio Zapper ~

Once you've done that, reboot your PC to "flush everything out of your PC's system :)
Now, again, you must uninstall Nero COMPLETELY.
This will help you do a "Clean" uninstall.
You must use all of Nero's Clean tools in order to do the job correctly.

When you reinstall Nero 6 DO NOT install InCD OR if you do, turn it off in msconfig (better to not install it) it can and does cause problems with other proggys.

When installing and uninstalling programs it's a good practice to complete the operation with a PC reboot. It only takes a minute, help it can, hurt it won't.
Whenever you're uninstalling a program, it's a good practice to reboot your PC (even if it's not called for) to help "Flush" the program out. By the same token, when you install a program, it's a good practice to reboot your PC (even though it doesn't call for it) to help the "New" guy "Settle" it in.
Now that we've done that (I know it's a "Pain" but when it's done correctly the first time and all the steps are followed then we don't have problems AND we don't have to do it all over again.
IF YOU DO ALL OF THE STEPS (and didn't skip just one step that "couldn't possibly" make a bit of difference) THEN, WE SHOULD BE GOOD TO GO - YIPPIEEE ! !
Now let's see how we do ~ Do a run through and report back with your results ~
You say you need Roxio, fine.
Install Roxio on another drive. Install ALL OF IT ON ANOTHER DRIVE !
When it tries to install on Program Files on your C:\ drive, Browse it to your D:\ drive (or your second drive). DO NOT ALLOW ANY OF IT TO GO TO YOUR C:\ DRIVE. When it is finally installed, right-click Roxio and create a "shortcut" and place that on your Desktop. Now and only if you've followed my directions completely will both proggys work without a problem on your PC.

Then come back and tell us how you're doing.

hey scuba.. sure ask away... ill answer as much as i possibly can.
they are cdrw's, i use verbatim and memorex as that is all that i can find in cdrw format down here in my town. I burn VCD adn SVCD movies that i download in bin/cue format. Ill definetly try the freeing up memory with the msconfig idea. When i burn there is nothing on, not even my antivirus. I dont surf or do anything. i usually leave my computer lol I did do the firmware upgrade and im not at firmware version 105 so im up to date. I cant uninstall roxio because im in the middle of severly important production. However roxio is entirely on my secondary drive and only a link is on my main c: drive. I have previously done the Nero tool clean thingy and reinstalled Nero again, but ill do it again just to make sure and because i now have the up to date firmware. ill post another log after i have installed the firmware and see if that helps to figure out wats wrong. I did burn a movie and there was less pixelation, but there still was some... so im lost. hmmm, im wondering if i have a settin wrong or something. ive even tried it in alcohol120% with no success.........

I can see the new firmware is installed, but the same problems remain. So.... (The burner might be faulty of course, but its hard to know until you can try without roxio). Again we need to rule out the media as a culprit.
Remind me of something, is the problem only with cd burning or dvds as well??

i burned one dvd and it didnt work but that was at the very beginning... my standalone might not be able to read them.... i have a magnasonic. .. i could try burning another dvd and see if it works. im dumb as a doornail when it comes to the dvd burner part of it. with the roxio issue...if i can get this burner working i can finish the slideshows with roxio and uninstall it....so its kind of a pickle.

Sorry, I wasn't as clear as i might have been. Was just wondering cus I keep reading that dvd burners have 2 lasers, 1 for cd & 1 for dvd, and was wondering if that was one way of proving if the burners defective or not..

Well, now that we've got the media issue straightened out . . . . let's find what we have to do to get your squared Way.
I cannot sea where memory is much of an issue. When burning only CD's, not much memory is required. With 256 MB of RAM, you S/B burning CD's while multi-tasking without a hitch.
It lQQks to me that it's either the drive OR Roxio. My money is on Roxio ! I find it incredible that "ALL" of Roxio is on your second drive UNLESS you had prior knowledge of the software's conflict. There are too many places where Roxio will install itself, by default, to program files, your startup menu your registry, etc. thereby corrupting other software. Secondly, if you knew there was a conflict with Roxio and Nero, why did you install them both on the same PC to begin with ? Be that as it may, you have corrupted software operating on your PC and will probably continue to have problems until you uninstall BOTH programs together cleaning your system totally and then begin to completely separate both proggys when you do install them. Uninstalling just one proggy won't help at all.
Since you don't wish to take the proper steps to address your issue, I suggest you forget your CD burning all together at this point - finish your work with Roxio, store it on your HD and then do a clean uninstall of both proggys, reinstall Nero and THEN finish your burning. Almost anything else is a total waste of time.
Your final option is to remove your burner, attach it to another PC via a USB connection, and ascertain whether it is, in fact, the problem.
I always lQQk to the software as the culprit as the solution involving software isn't costly. :-D

Ok, I have the LG GSA-4163B burner also. I just bought some memorex 16x DVD-R disks at bestbuy. But this stupid burner will only burn them at 4x. I have the a105 firmware and have tried drive speed, and it says it's only 4x disks. Any ideas. THanks

When attempting to achieve the best burn, consider reducing that burn speed to the 4X level. If you have a new 16X, DL burner, you may do fine burning Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim's DataLife at 6X but, even then, coasters may be expected happen from time to time. Experienced pple will tell you that burning at anything over 4X is just asking for trouble when doing DVD video work.
As to your media purchase, Memorex is an excellent example as DVD media goes. 90% of Memorex discs are made by CMC and is sub-standard as far as DVD backups are concerned. Figures as high as 50% coasters have been reported (One member bought a stack of 50 and got 23 good burns.), not what I would call an impressive record. Memorex made a name for itself with their magnetic tapes (VHS and audio cassettes) and have been living off it ever since. There are 4 different companies that manufacture Memorex DVD's BTW and product quality varies widely as you might imagine. Only 10% of the Memorex out there, those are discs manufactured by Mitsubishi in the 25-pack spindle , and they're the exception - they are the good ones. It's easy to see now why the quality of a big-named company can't be trusted - " Who's making your Memorex tonight ?"
Is it just Memorex ? No ! I just used Memorex as an example, Orange Pack, Princo, Great AZO, 90% of Memorex and most "Store" brands and others are just not that good for DVD burning. Those same discs however, are quite good for your MP3 music, picture archives, spreadsheets and Data.Even DataSafe G04's, made by Ritek, have been reported as an inferior quality media and are evoking that "Oh no, I shouldn't have gotten those." That's why we are specific in the type of media we are recommending.
What we are suggesting is to download this DVD Identifier to find out who manufactured your DVD and if it's a decent quality.

Once you have your disc identified, click the "More information" icon and see what information you're given. if you're not sure of the quality, come on back and we'll check it out for you -
* Cheap media freezes, skips, pixelats and may refuse to be recognized by both burners and players :-( Besides "Freezing", "skips" many times you'll get a "Cyclic Redundancy error" (CRC error) or an "I/O error". This message can mean that your discs are scratched or dirty, it can also mean that your burner won't accept your "cheap" media :-(
Another problem which, "Pops up" is a "*Power Calibration Error." This can stop you right in your tracks and most often is caused by, "Yep, you guessed it", inexpensive media. *A "Power Calibration Error" can also be attributed to the Optical Components of a DVD Writer, though this isn't usually the case.
We need to use a consistently Hi-quality DVD media for our backups. Burning DVD video's isn't at all like burning CD's where almost any disc's are fine to use. Likewise, it's not like burning text files, photos or even music to DVD's. Burning DVD video requires a consistently Hi-quality dye application over a good composite disc and believe it or not, not that many media meet those requirements. The following media meet our criteria for a good DVD video discs and they are;! Phillips, Sony, TDK, HP, "Branded" RiData G03's, Maxell +R and Fuji +R's BUT not the -R's as they cannot be trusted, Ritek G04 and G05's (not the 01's or the 02's), Verbatim DataLife, Verbatim DataLife Plus and media boasting "Advanced Metal AZO" BUT, it must say "Advanced METAL AZO", this indicates a superior dye and dye application on a good composite disc. Other discs such as Memorex, "Great AZO", and Princo are, in a word, crap. As a general rule, the majority of discs manufactured by Taiyo Yuden, Mitsubishi, RICOH are good bets. Only those Ritek named above are to be trusted the rest should be avoided. Look closely at those discs we recommended, you will see some dye types not listed by us. Those are poor risks even though the same company makes them.
When doing backups, purchasing inexpensive media or even average media is a gamble, there may be one or two pple that seem to win BUT, the vast majority of pple lose, they lose varying amounts true but, they still lose :-( We put this information out to enlighten you, do with it what you will. We don't really care if you wish to throw your money away by gambling it on crappy media, after all, it is your money. The choice is, and always will be, yours.
By using a decent quality media, I can guarantee you one thing to an absolute certainty; it surely cannot hurt.
As to all that Memorex you bought -
If you want to "work" through it ~ Set your DVD Target Size to 4200MB instead of DVD-5 so you don't burn to the edge of the disc where Memorex "forgot" to put an even coat of dye.
Secondly, reduce your burning speed to 2.4X. Those are 2 tried an true solutions to get better results than anything else. Will you still get coasters ? Probably. Memorex is a crappy media BUT if you follow those 2 suggestions, you'll get the majority of burns.
Will those discs be any good 2 years from now ? Probably not. Memorex has a high failure rate. You should research that. I had to re-burn 90 discs onto decent media when I used Memorex so that I didn't lose the movie. The originals are safe BUT I have to dig them out (a hassle).
Give all that a try and let us know how you made out.

You have been told the answers to your problems.
1. Roxio and most other programs ESPECIALLY Nero do not get along. That means, keep Roxio and no other programs OR get rid of Roxio entirely and use most any other program on the planet. Your choice. If you choose to keep Roxio, expect trouble, period ! Of the thousands of pple I've helped over the years, I can count the number of pple who had Roxio without a problem on my fingers with a few fingers untouched.
2. You?ve been told about your media several times. Attempting to use crap media like Princo, Memorex, and the like AND trying to burn at 16X will get you a never-ending supply of coasters.
Backing up DVD's is a snap IF you are willing to learn from more experienced pple with years of experience. We made all the mistakes you've already made and then some. We're experts at making coasters, far better at it than you'll ever be AND we've lost more $$$$ buying lousy software. Yes, I had Roxio, it came free with my burner and another version with my PC. I paid the fee to update it - TWICE before I finally learned that it was the cause of all my programs. I bought DVD XCopy and many more before I found out what was crap and what wasn't. I was smart enough to never buy a program that hadn't been made for years unlike many who are still buying XCopy. My mistakes make yours seem like kindergarten BUT I listened to others and now haven't had a problem in the last year and 1/2.
Go back and read the answers pple gave you. Your problems will lessen.

hey all, i just got way to frustrated with everything with the burner, nothign seemed to work. i figured that its probably because i needed more memory. Someone told me recently that my burner is a dvd ram and not a dvd rom .. does that mean it goes off memory. if so than that could explain alot of things. someone told me that my burner is now obsolete but i have no clue as this burner was purchased brand new from a computer store only in july 2005. ... i have upgraded my computer now as of 2 days ago so im still installing the programs i had on. i just wanted to give you all an update and to let those still strugglin with similar problems some things i found out. if anyone knows the difference between ram and rom id love to learn about what my burner does and how it works. i know nothing about it i guess. thnx

Hi dolphyn,
Perhaps I can help. A DVD-RAM is usually a cartridge type disc that can be written to time after time. Only a few companies support them and small companies who backup the daily sales, work, etc on them use them most often. A DVD-ROM is what we use when we read a DVD or burn things to a DVD disc. A straight DVD ROM drive is usually a reader drive able to stop and go rapidly - that's what's needed when reading a DVD. A DVD-ROM Burner must work harder when reading a disc BUT, it can write to a DVD or CD disc.
I hope that sheds some light on the matter.

cartridge type disk?? i dont understand that at all. so i cant use this burner for what im trying to do? (burn movies and data (programs, pictures etc)) but its a dvd/cd combo burner .. so what can i or what cant i do with the dvd part? i bought a dvd-r but it sounds like i cant even use the dvd burn part
