I've got a ps2 slimline, and swap magice 3.x (i don't remember what exactly, and they don't have labels). The PS2 is BRAND NEW. I bought it at MOST a month ago.
It plays original games fine, and it runs my swap magics fine. I rarely have DREs on my Swap Magics.
However, alot of my games are unplayable. For example, i have burned Popn Music 11 and Beatmania IIDX 9th style, and they run horribly. I can play AT MOST 3 songs before they stop loading. After 3 songs, the load times get longer and longer, and eventaully stop.
Since they were able to read fine on the first 3 songs, i figured it was just heat. Also, i have noticed that the PS2 is getting really hot. I tried setting up a water cooling system out of old PC setup parts i had, and there was no difference. So i went for the old-fashioned approach and just filled a bag with ice and sat the PS2 on top of the ice.
I still had the crappy loading problem, so i doubt heat is an issue here.
So then i thought that perhaps the media i was using was the problem. I burned on 3 different types of media. First, i tried Memorex DVD+R discs. These can run about 3 songs before they stop loading. Then, i tried TDK DVD+Rs, which are (apparently) supposed to be the king of PS2 burning media. I can get maybe 6 songs out of these discs. Then, i went for the gusto and used some of my Tayio Yuden DVD+Rs. EVEN THESE DIDN'T WORK, AND THEY COST A METRIC FUCKTON TO BUY.
So, what is going wrong? Its not the heat, as i tried using ice, and its not the media, as i used the highest quality discs you can buy. I doubt it is the laser as i said the ps2 is BRAND NEW.
Thanks.

It depends on your PS2 I use DVD+R and have no problems. The only problems I have is if the PS2game is a CD-ROM then I convert it to DVD-ROM and burn it to DVD+R media and it loads better. But you can always change the booktype to DVD-ROM if your burrning program alows you to this to maybe fix the compatibility issue.

well swap magic said on the package it was for DVD-R and CD-R....I've never used +R media....and to larrylje...swap magic will actually launch +R ? without a chip? The reason I ask is because +R media is on sale right now...I might just try it....Someone in another post somewhere was telling another guy to not use RW media because it mucks up the laser I wonder if that's true?

I use DVD+R disc, my slimline takes them. It dosent mean yours will read them well. It depends on what drive your PS2 has. Now with swap magic yes they will boot up DVD-R or DVD+R I dont know about the DVD-RW disc. But I do know that swap magic dosent support Double layer Disc. All I can say is try DVD-R oe DVD+R. Find a media that works well with your PS2 and stick with it. Also burn at 4x or less.

most people seem to have problems with the RW media
I would stick with either -R or +R
I like the -R myself, 8X speed DVD's
You can always try rebuilding the game before you burn it
that sometimes can solve the slow load times.
Also instead of ice i would try standing the unit on
it's side and pointing a fan at it.

it may just be that Samsung media.
I don't really know anyone using that to back up
games. Try another brand
TDK,Philips,Verbatim,Ritek G04, Taiyo Yudon
those are what i see used the most.
If you have a Sony DVD writer, then you should have good
luck with good media. I use TDK & Philips all the time
in my Sony DRU-700A burner.
Also, try burning the MDS file, Not the ISo file
with DVD Decrypter. That is the most common method used.
here is a tutorial
http://home.earthlink.net/~moderator/id3.html
P.S. what do you mean when you say the PS2 is open?
You need to invest in a flip top cover. You should
not leave the top off for the electronics to be
exposed all the time.

PS2 are and can be picky on the media you use. It took me 3 diffrent brands before I finaly got great results with the media I use now. All PS2 are diffrent so you need to test diffrent media and find the ones your PS2 like. Just becuase somone has good results from a certain media dosent mean you will and always burn no faster then 4x so burn at 4x or lower.

naa g, because the screws are not there, i can easly remove the cover... then the inside cover over the place where CD is put, when swap magic is put in... and then you have to put backup, i just remove the case over the cd, put the backup, put it bk, load it... then put the ps2 cover back on... so its not exposed all the time... only for a min or 2! =)
haha, that was funny thou man..."You need to invest in a flip top cover" lol... Thanks dude...!

Like before try diffrent media. Just cause they are onsale dosent mean they are right for your system. Alot have had problems with Maxwell. You need to try diffrent brands and again use the ones that work best with your system, and yes you should click on the MDS file when you make a iso image with DVD Decryptor and burn no faster then 4x

you are going to need the orignals, id sugest getting a PS2 game you have and get the bugs worked out before renting more and also see if blockbuster offers 2 games out at a time unlimited for a month. I know they have it in the states I think i paid $25 for mine and you can rent as many as you want for a month but can only have 2 out at the same time.

yeah, i am a member of Blockbuster movie club. It's 17.99
and you get 2 free in store rentals every month
that are good for either games or movies.
hope you get your shiznit worked out, glad to hear
that more of them are working then before
but i can tell you that i have had games that skipped
or had slow load time and just too the back up and
burned it to a better disc and it worked fine for mine.
as long as it was a good enough burn to have the full ISO
on the disc it should work.

...... It may be your burning method.
I'm running a PS2 slimline, just like you,
I'm also running swap magic and a fliptop...... just like you.
I burned IIDX 9th Style on shitty media,
and the game has never run with any problems.
I actually used to buy GOOD media, up until recently.
Nowadays, I just buy "good enough" media, seeing as I can reburn the games if they stop loading, which they rarely do.
However, some of the GOOD, expensive media that I used to use, I used a different burning speed.
My PSTwo only reads DVD+Rs. So, I used to burn my 8X DVD+Rs at 2.4X. I once experimented, burned them at 4X, and now the games work better than ever.
IIDX 9th Style takes up quite an assload of the DVD, and is a very finnicky game. A LOT of Japanese games are finnicky as hell, and I actually have no clue why..... but try what I did.
Try burning your stuff at different speeds, 1X, 2X, 2.4X, 4X, etc.
Because I haven't had the same problems you're having, and I'm using the same setup, and crappier media than you (I'm using TDK DVD+Rs, but a long time ago, I found those NOT to be as good as people say they are. From my experience, even Taiyo Yudens have given me problems.) Anyways, I bought them for fairly cheap (25 for $10) and I burn them at 4X.
IIDX runs perfectly fine for me, no skipping, and no problems with load times. However..... a lot of Japanese arcade games have ultra-shitty interfaces.
So, try different speeds, that might be the trick.
Oh, by the way, I'm using a LiteOn burner SOHW-832S, with no firmware changes, I'm using some TDK media that I got for cheap from Fry's. They're not the TDK G02s that are supposed to be king kong shit for burning.

I used to have issues with afew games(slow load times/choppy sound),
I still use DVD Decrypter to rip my iso's but burn them to dvd using Nero. I have never had another problem, apart from the odd rebuild(Mercenaries).
