Hey. I used DVD Decrypter to pull the files off of a UK disk, Black Adder. It put them on my hd. then I used DVDShrink to put it on the disk. I let it do the deep analysis and i removed all of the languages except english.

When I put it in my 3 yr old DVD player, the feedback was "Check Disk". I am using Phillips 8x DVD+R media. I burned at 8x. When i tried it in my PC with MediaPlayer, the menu came up and was active and i played the movie.

My end result is to back this up region free to a DVD so I can watch it. It was a gift from a UK friend, would like to watch it on the big screen instead of 19" monitor.

The disk at TS_AUDIO and TS_VIDEO directories in the root. Is it my DVD player or media or what?

It may be an incompatablity between your non book typed +R and your older DVD player. Could try -R, which many older players were compatable with.

Dvd-r media is more compatable with older dvd players. It could also be caused by the media and who it was actually manufactured by. Phillips buys from the lowest bidder and sometimes you get some that is made by garbage media manufacturers like cmc magnetics. Use this free proggy and tell me the manufacturer and ID. http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/ Also slow your burn speed down to 4x or even slower with crap media.

Depending on the make and model of your dvdrw you may be able to booktype dvd+r/rw media to dvd-rom therefor making them much more compatable, even more so than DVD-R in most cases. What is the make and model of your dvdrw?

there is another possibility.

The UK disc would be in PAL format. I'm not sure what country you are in but your 3 year old dvd player may only play NTSC discs.

agent-k is right. UK is PAL territory. If your in the US (which I think you are which is region 1). You cannot simply just make it region free to play it. You have to convert the signal from PAL to NTSC and make it region free (or make it whatever region your in).

I did a copy of a movie with DVD Shrink, and the resultant DVD will play on my Transonic DVD Home Theatre system =Model TC1378HC= but it skips through the movie and will not play correctly. I have a BENQ DW1640 Pro DVD Writer. Win XP Pro, AMD 2200+ Processor, 60Gb Free HDD space, 512 Meg of DDR 2700 RAM. Incidentally for some reason when I play a movie on my BENQ Writer I get NO sound but the pic is OK. This is the same for original or copy of the movie. The skiping only shows in The home theatre player where the sound works.
I'm using DVD-R disks or DVD+RW disks and get the same results each time. I have tried 3 different movies.

bigbear77 - If your backup freezes, stutters, skips, or has some pixelation, it is more than likely due to poor quality media being used. Cheap media is poorly manufactured around the edge of the disc, hence the reason why it mostly skips or freezes from the middle toward the end of the movie. The two main things to consider first are:

1. Is it cheap media that you are using? (ie. some off brand you bought at a local computer store/fair, even a store like Circuit City or Best Buy sells cheap low quality media.)

2. How fast are you burning? - Burn no faster than 4X, might have to go down to 2X with really cheap media.

Also, are you using adhesive labels on your back ups? If so, try removing the labels (if you can) and playing them again. Go here for more info on why not to use labels. - http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=28604

You can go here for some other possible solutions: http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=44912

Also try lowering outcome the "Target DVD size".

Open DVD Shrink. Click "Edit", then "Preferences". On the first tab at the top in the drop down box, change it from "DVD-5 (4.7GB) to "Custom" and enter a number of 4200MB (4464MB is burning to the edge of the disc, you want to stay away from the edge as the edge of cheap media (disc's) are poorly manufactured). Screen Shot Below:

Yes there is an update for your burner 1.0b

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?category=4&manufactor=30

Also, you may want to rethink your media, Memorex is not the best. Try and give your burner a lift and get some good media i.e. Verbatim, Sony, Fuji or Maxell.

@mace71299,

Dvd identifier will tell you who the media is actually made by. The packaging really won't tell you squat unless you know who a certain brand name media is almost always made by. Here's some examples of media brand names with different manufactures.

Memorex DVD+R 16X (CMCMAG M01)
Memorex DVD+R 4x (CMC MAG.F01)
Memorex DVD+R 4x (MBIPG101-R03-000)
Memorex DVD+R 4x (RICOHJPNR01)
Memorex DVD+R 4x Printable (MCC-003-000)
Memorex DVD+R 8X (CMC MAG E01)
Memorex DVD+R 8X (PHILIPSC08)
Memorex DVD+R 8X (PRODISCR03)
Memorex DVD+RW 2.4x (CMC MAG.W01)
Memorex DVD+RW 2.4x (INFODISCA01)
Memorex DVD+RW 2.4x (RICOHJPNW01)
Memorex DVD+RW 4x (CMC MAG.W02)
Memorex DVD+RW 4x (MKM-A02)
Memorex DVD+RW 4x (RICOHJPNW11)
Memorex DVD-R 2x (CMC MAG.....)
Memorex DVD-R 2x (TAIYOYUDEN..)
Memorex DVD-R 4x (CMC MAG. AF1)
Memorex DVD-R 4x (MBI 01RG20)
Memorex DVD-R 4x (MCC 01RG20)
Memorex DVD-R 4x (ProdiscS03)
Memorex DVD-R 8X (CMC MAG AE1)
Memorex DVD-RW 1x (ProdiscDVDRW)
Memorex DVD-RW 2x (RITEKW01) MINI DVD-RW 1.36GB
Memorex DVD-RW 2x (RITEKW01....)
Memorex DVD-RW 2x (TDK502sakuM3)
MemorexDVD-RAM 2x (Optodisc)

I would to increase compatability. Note: this only works with dvd+r/rw media and will not affect dvd-r/rw media.

This is one of the worst media manufacturs there is and causes more problems than any media I know of. Try some better media. I don't think your dvdrw is capable of bitsetting so I would try some dvd-r/rw media.

i think it may be my dvd player, a zenith dvd2100. i burned another on the crap media and tried it in my car, a visteon made GM rear dvd player. it played but the picture was rolling. i tried clonedvd2 with AnyDVD and the picture showed this:
Summary for drive E:
Drive (Hardware) Region: free

Media is a Data DVD.
Booktype: dvd-rom (version 1), Layers: 2 (parallel)

Video DVD (or CD) label: BLACKADDER
Media is CSS protected!
Video Standard: PAL
Media is locked to region(s): 2 4!

RCE protection not found.
DVD structure appears to be correct.
Changed firstplay: Jump directly to TitleMenu!
Structural copy protection not found.
Autorun not found on Video DVD.
Bad sector protection not found.
Emulating RPC-2 drive with region 2!

Ok. i understand regions. i just want to make a copy for region 1 so i can watch it on my own dvd player. what bothers me is the video standard being PAL. is this an issue? i am going to try it on another player to see if it plays.

if i use AnyDVD, can i use clonedvd2 or dvdxplatinum to make a region 1 NTSC copy? do i need to use dvddecrypter to remove the region and then use shrink to put it on dvd? too many tools, not enough simple info. help me, spock, help me...

If this is in PAL format it is an issue, you need to convert it to NTSC format, unless you have a DVD Player that will play it. Most of US players are NTSC. Here is a thread that discusses conversion.

I forgot to update my progress.

I took the dvd to another player, a progresive scan player. it played it but it was jumpy. like is was missing 1 out of 4 frames. odd. played fine on the pc.

I will pick up some maxell or better DVD-R media. may work on my DVD2100 zenith dvd player, nonprogressive.

removed the region and copied it to the HD with DVD Decrypter
changed it from PAL to NTSC with VOB blanker.
