Do you think it would be possible to have some type of indication by our user names letting members know our online/offline status? If the getting is really good, the member would be able to change his/her status at will regardless of their actual status.
Even though this is a forum, it could aid in live support to our members. Meaning at any given time faster responses to posts and more satisfied members due to the simple fact of being helped quicker.
Just a thought ;)

The live add idea would be great, it would let people know wither to sit waiting for a update or wither they should check back later, I've seen myself siting for ages waiting for a replay not knowing if the person was on or offline, if i remember correctly Daniel_G has something along the lines of what your asking for in his sig but it's something to do with messenger i think and i have no idea if he uses it to let people know if he's online but it's a pretty handy thing.
aye aye man

Now you have 5 votes. Great idea. Other forum sites have the online/offline indicator, so why shouldn't a great site like AD?

You have my vote, but mods and admins should always keep their status disabled...

In my initial post I stated the above. ^^^
I think that pretty much would cover the private/nonprivate issue. The member has the option. IF this idea was proven and put into the works I'm sure the Staff, Admins & Moderators would decide "yay or nay".
**edit THANKS FOR THE BACKING OF THE IDEA
Let's just hope the Staff agrees and goes for implemenation in the near future. ;)

Not many people like them in fact no does!
But their isn't any way of stopping them :( thats way private status for mods and admins would be a good idea if the whole status thing came about
EDIT: Back to keeping this thread on topic :P

I dont think it would cost anything, its just a matter of modifying the site which takes time. BTW you double posted, just like your sig said.

Well it didnt work, and it would take longer than a minute to modify this site like that, especially in HTML.

Problem, as always with new features like this, is that they add additional pressure to the database -- poor olde Dual Xeon 3.2GHz with 4GB of RAM does already max out during the peak hours.. Adding online/offline indication would require at least two additional queries per page load for each user who browses the site when logged in. The online user counter we had a while ago used a logic that already made such feature possible, but we had to pull the plug from it about 2 months ago.
We have started balancing some of the queries already to our 2nd db server (same specs) and might end up having to add third db box to the equation by the end of the year with the current growth levels.

About 6000+ during the peak times (using 15min period to count the unique users based in the IP address and browser tag).
