What are the negatives in doing this? Are there possible negative consequences in going with a modified firmware upgrade? Maybe slowing down my burner speed or negatively affecting other aspects of my burner? Would using modified firmware void the warranty on my 1 1/2 month old Dell PC (not a big deal since the warranty is only good for 3 months)? I have an NEC ND-3530A burner and would like to be able to change the booktype to DVD-ROM to get better overall compatibility with home players with the DVD+R discs I am now using. And I believe I can only do this with a modified firmware upgrade. The DVD+R discs seem to play fine on my home player but may not on other players if I were to do backups for friends and family.

Also, could someone direct me to the right firmware to use with my particular burner? I have been directed to a wab site (mecheldeboer.com) were the firmware can be downloaded but am not sure which of the several files I should use.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. There are many very knowledgeable people on this forum and I am glad I found it.

Your NEC ND-3530A newest firmware is 103C. Go here http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2110 and download it if you feel the need to.

Upgrading your dvd burner's firmware is good because it will be more compatibility with other blank media and codes. Sometimes it will give you better perfermances such as speed, sometimes you can have a firmware that can book type a DVD+R into a DVD-ROM format. In the end, it's all up to you to decided to update your dvd burner or not. If you don't like the performance or speed after updating the firmware, you can always flash it back to its old firmware.

WARNING: Do not "update/upgrade" your SAMSUNG BD-D5XXX series (Bluray Player), or else you cant enjoy any of your movie files.

When it comes to NEC burners, I prefer Liggy and Dees modified firmware. Here is a site that you can read up on their modified firmware for the NEC3530A.

http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=137736&highlight=nd3530...

I have used Liggy & Dees modified firmware for my 3520 and have never experienced any problems and gained bitsetting capability, better writing strategies, and removed riplock.

As a general rule your manufacturers warranty will be voided if you use modified firmware.

The choice is yours...
