VHS to DVD via Capture Card or DVD Recorder

I was wondering whether to purchase a Video Capture Card for my computer to transfer my old videos into DVD's OR to perhaps just buy a stand alone DVD Recorder, connect it to my Video Player burn the videos to DVD like ABC then load them into my computer for restoration work if needed. The thing is a stand alone DVD Recorder like LG DR7922W with duel disc recording sells for only $250.00 and it's still going down in price. What is everyone's view on this subject???

If you need editing, get a PCI card.
If you just want immediate copy, with no editing, get the standalone.
I usually recommend the PCI card. Even if you don't need any editing now, you probably will in the future, and it's cheaper.

Thanks very much for your response Jim. I was going to buy a Pinnacle Dazzle 90 but I heard so many bad reports about it. Which PCI card do you recommend? A Hauppauge or something? I don't have a great Video Card on my computer just a Leadtek Winfast 8X GF4 FX5200 128Mg. My computer is mainly for music work.

Asus P4P800 Deluxe motherboard
M Audio 2496 Soundcard

I also have Nerovision Express 2 Nero Express 6 (OEM Suite 3)
I heard there was a Nero corporate version that cleans up tapes as you transfer them through your PCI Card frame by frame but haven't been able to find out about that yet. Sounds interesting

Yes, I definitely recommend the Hauppauge PVR-150/250/500 cards.
You don't need a 350 with your video card.
The 250 is the older "workhorse", the 150 is much newer, and finally stable with the latest drivers. The 500 is a dual tuner, basically two 150's on one card, with FM radio tossed in (but no remote).
The PVR-150 is available online for $65, and the 500 for about double that. The 250 is being phased out.

There are other ways of pre (or post) filtering your captures. You don't need Nero corp.
