Hi PHIX8,
Welcome to Afterdawn!

This is usually the result of burning the disc with non-compliant video files. Shrink will not accept bad files without giving you an error message of some sort.

Hard to say what is wrong at this point without more information

Shrink opens a burning program, usually Nero or DVD Decrypter, to burn with. Which one are you using?

If you have Nero installed then you should be able to come up with a burn log.

Look here:
C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero\NeroHistory.log

Copy/paste your last burn log file into a reply. Make sure you remove your Nero serial number. It starts with 1a2... Find it near the top of the log.

This is assuming you have Nero.

Shrink makes a set of files on your hard drive during the process. Can you play them?

I'd like you to open Shrink with your movie and select "Backup!. This will open the Backup DVD menu. Under the first tab, "Target Device" find the "Select backup target:" and the "Select target folder for DVD output files:" boxes and tell me what is in them.

You can hit Cancel at this point. I just need the information.

Frank

Its a good idea as suggested previously be fasfrank, to check the quality and playback control prior to burning them to a DVD. This guide is assuming that you rip in DVD Shrink with a backup target as "Hard Disk Folder". You should have several ".vob", ".bup", and ".ifo" files: http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?t=54219

PHIX8 have you tryed a different program other than DVD Shrink?

what i would do is uninstall DVD Shrink do a disc cleanup and defrag your machine then reinstall DVD Shrink and try it again.

are you sure you are use DVD Shrink correctly? heres a guide to walk you though using dvd shrink
http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/index.html

next thing are you using good blank media?
good media to use would be Taiyo Yuden,Verbatim or Ritek(ridata) and burn at 4X max.

it DVD Shrink still isnt working you might try a different program ,and good one being CloneDVD 2 and running AnyDVD in the background.

shoot us back and let us know how everything turned out

Shrink creates a temporary file each time you use it. Open it and see what files you have in there.

You should have something like this:
(From Million Dollar Baby)
VTS_01_5.VOB
VTS_01_4.VOB
VTS_01_3.VOB
VTS_01_2.VOB
VTS_01_1.VOB
VTS_01_0.VOB
VTS_01_0.IFO
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VTS_01_0.BUP
VIDEO_TS.BUP

You should be able to click on the VIDEO_TS.IFO to start the movie on your computer.

Also try this:

Put the copy that won't play in your computer. Open it in Windows Explorer by clicking on the + box next to the movie. You should see a VIDEO_TS folder. Click the folder and you should see a list of files similar to the one above.

My Pioneer 109 reads and plays all my burned movies so I think yours should as well.

By the way your Pioneer's firmware is out of date. The current version is 1.58. You have 1.40. You can go to http://www.rpc1.org for an update.

It looks like you are using up most of your memory during the process. Try closing some programs before starting. You shouldn't multitask while copying DVDs.

You have a lot of these:

All my Pioneer drives do the same thing. It has never been a problem other than it makes big burn logs.

I really think this is a compatibility issue with the type of media you are using. Try your +R copys in some other players if you can.
Try switching to -R media and see. From the log and everything else you stated, it looks like your copies are being burned correctly. No error messages.
With +R media you can sometimes change the "Booktype" to make it more compatible. You can't with the Pioneer drive though.

If I were in your position, I'd get a couple of Verbatim DVD-RW rewritable discs just to experiment with. That way you are not wasting media.

Another thing I noticed is that you have just one of the HDDs on the Primary IDE buss. The other HDD is on the Secondary IDE buss along with the Pioneer. You may want to relocate the second HDD To the "Slave" position on the same cable with the other HDD. That will put both HDDs on the Primary IDE buss and the Pioneer by itself on the second. This is the configuration recommended by Maxtor. Make sure the HDD with Windows is in the "Master" position on the Primary. It looks like it is, currently.

Configuration from the Maxtor book:

Primary Master, 0: Boot Drive
Primary Slave, 1: Additional Storage Drive
Secondary Master, 0: DVD Drive
Secondary Slave, 1: No Device (This is where an additional DVD drive would go)

If you do this be aware of the jumper settings on the back of each drive. The drives located at the end (black) connector should be set to "Master" and the drives connected to the middle (gray) connector should be set to "Slave".

That would leave one unused connector on the Secondary IDE buss. This would be a perfect place to install a DVD-ROM. They are less than $30.00 and make the copy process easier.

That firmware will work just fine. Region location won't be an issue.
The firmware I mentioned is OEM and will work fine for you.

I think you should have someone swap the drives for you. The reason I suggest that is because your hard drives need to be repositioned. I'm worried that if it is not done correctly the first time then you may loose data or worse. Swapping a DVD drive is not as likely to cause problems as a hard drive swap.
Also Maxtor HDDs have rather strange jumper pin settings and unless you have the book it is difficult to get them set correctly. You can go on line and get instructions for this from Maxtor if you feel like doing it yourself.

That is a good link for Windows Media Player instructions. You need to have some way of watching movie files on your computer.

What happens when you put the original movie in? Can you watch it?
