Hi. I have a problem with static appearing when I burn cds or when I transfer music from a cd into my ITunes Library. I have a Dell Dimension 4700, Pentium 4 and I used SonicRecord Now for most of my burns, and obviously I use ITunes when transferring music.

I get static when I burn and when I transfer to ITunes. This problem doesn't happen all the time, but it shouldn't happen at all. I've reinstalled Windows XP, I've downloaded a DMA patch that Dell recommended, and I've had the CD-RW replaced (diagnostic found a bad spindle), but nothing has worked.

I'd like to try to slow down the burn speed and see if that improves things, but I don't know how to do this on my machine. Can anyone tell me how I do this? Is there a setting within Sonic, or is the setting somewhere else? Thanks.

First off I'd recommend losing iTunes, and definately don't use it for ripping. Give EAC (exact audio copy) a try. Its free and is hands down the best ripper there is. When combined with the LAME mp3 codec plugin, using VBR 256 encoding, the end result will be the highest quality mp3s you can achieve. We have a guide on how to setup and use EAC here:

As far as burning goes, I use Nero to burn my data and audio disks. Not sure about Sonic, but with Nero you can manually select what speed you want. However I don't think lowering the burning speed will fix your problem, it sounds like it might be an issue with itunes, so you might want to give EAC a try and see if you have different results.

For the best quality mp3s use EAC (exact audio copy) to rip your audio CDs and LAME to encode them. Follow this guide:
