The Maxell 100-pack spindle DVD+R is on sale at BestBuy for only $29.99CAN. It looks like a good deal, but the "Made in Taiwan" label make me think twice. I heard the made in Japan Maxell DVD+R are great. But how about these made in Taiwan ones? Are they cmag craps? Is this a good buy?

they are definitely NOT the CMC MAG crap discs that other brands use...these SHOULD be

Maxell DVD+R 4.7GB RITEK...R03 8x

which seem VERY favorable to MANY of the members here, i for one have NOT used them before, but, i know a couple guys who's opinions i trust (saugmon & catfreak) that HAVE used them with great success.

you should be good to go, especially if they are on sale~ :) good luck~

Is that the +4x or +8x taiwanese maxells?

Every batch of +4x maxell I have used has the Ricohjpn-01 MID code. And that's from just about all their different jewel case and spindle packs sizes, except for the 100 pack with purty colors.

All the plus format maxells have performed identically for me regardless if they are ricohs/hitachi/or ritek.

I love those Ritek r-03s. I've been getting the 100 pack spindles of Office depot's own brand name +8x for 28 to 30 cents apiece,in US currency-when on sale.Their dash 8x 100 pack spindles are turning up Ritek-Go5!

The maxells are on sale at Staples for $18 for 50. My nearby staples only have the taiwanese riteks.Wal-mart also only had the taiwanese so I didn't use the staples ad to get the hitachis for the same price. Maybe next sale?

For $18 i'd get the hitachi's "Maxell-002-00",but the riteks I can find cheaper.

Sounds like a great price for $30 canadian currency.

This disturbed me when I heard it from several members a while back :
The smaller 3 or 5 pack/with jewel cases in the dash 4x,made in taiwan were coding as CMC! So I don't refer any more members to those smaller dash maxell packs. All those dash smaller packs I used were made in japan by MXL-rg02.Ty-g01 and Ritek-g04 are also on those dash 4x discs.4 different manufacturers for the maxell -4x yellowtops!!!!!!!

I bought the same Maxell 100 spindle pack from Best Buy for 29.99 CAN. I've been asking the same question. I think the code is(MAXELL002). Does anyone know if this code is good?

Thanks for the comments guys! Those Maxell 100-pack MIT spindels are 8x DVD+R, and hopefully the code will be RITEK R03 which Saugmon mentioned.

@lube99 - You are managed to get the ones with code MAXELL002? That means you got the MIJ (Japan) ones! Are you sure about the code since I don't think BestBuy Canada have MIJ Maxell anymore? Which BestBuy did you go and when did you bought it? Thanks a lot!

Best buy in canada may be like office depot and staples here in the states. One sale they'll have taiwanese and a sale or 2 later, they'll have those hitachi maxells.Sometimes they'll have both and you can sort out the japanese spindles. Both are sweet.

They are sweet! Those hitachi maxells are a little harder to find, but for the same on sale price,I'll grab them up. Those ritek maxells better be under 30 cents before I pick them up. I'm thrifty!!

Finally, got a 100-pack spindle of Maxell 8x DVD+R from BestBuy for only $23.84CAN! What a deal! However, I noticed one strange thing on the DVD wrapper. I realize the "Made in Taiwan" label is just a sticker label, and it is placed right on top on the "Made in Japan" orignal packaging. I can clearly see through the "Made in Taiwan" label and see the "made in Japan" words underneath it. Kind of strange. Any comments on this strange packaging?

And now, my next task is to buy a good DVD writer to burn those babies. My eyes have been set on the new LG GSA-4165 because of its price listed in some local stores. Only $55.00CAN! Any comments and other suggestions? I can hardly find any info about this DVD burner. No people is discussing this burner in this forum, and this model does not even exist in the LG home page!

I notice the Made in Taiwan sticker covering made in Japan on those maxell shrink wrappers. Not all of them, but most of the taiwanese at staples and Office depot down here in central ohio. No biggie. They are still Riteks so far,but that may change later on.

My benq's love the Ritek-r03,but I can get them cheaper on the Office Depot brand of +8x in the 100 pack spindles, under 30 cents apiece USA currency. Those OD +8x riteks are looking sweet.. 1 coaster after 280 of them so far,120 more to go.That only coaster was a playback coaster, out of the blue! Not too shabby.

The reports on Maxell cmags are on the dash format,in either the 3 or 5 pack jewel case packs. All of those quantity batches of the 3 and 5 packs I burned were made in japan- MXL-RG02. I've burned many a different quantity size spindles and jewel case packs of both formats and only had trouble with them on 1 burner, but it was a piece of crap, LOL. No cmags among them.

@saugmon - Some questions about the Ritek-r03 that you used:

1) Have you ever use them to copy DVD movies? Any pixelated, freezed screens or any unusual behavior so far on any of the movies you burnt on the Ritek-r03?
2) Is your burner a 16x burner? What speed did you usually use to burn the Ritek-r03?
3) You said you have 1 playback coaster so far for the Ritek-r03. Is it totally unplayable for that one?
4) You said you have trouble with the Ritek-r03 on one burner you have. What is the brand and model of that burner? Do you mean that burner have trouble playing or burning the Ritek-r03?

Thanks a lot!

arznable: The ritek-r03 are performing just as well as my Maxell-002-00 and yuden000-t02. That only coaster, burned ok,but wouldn't play back entire movie. Looked like the disc separated. It was the only 1 so far.

1 burner I have: I/O magic 16x dual format/booktyping capability-built by EMPA, had problems with the ritek-g04. A firmware update helped but still gave me problems. The booktyped plus format to dvd-rom totally sucked, 50% compatability on my stand alones where as the dash format was abuot 75%. Not even close to both my benq 1620s.

That's all I use these discs for, backing up dvds. I have no use for data dvds, except for backing up my os on 2 Yuden000-T02s.

Even though the majority of this 8x media will burn successfully at 12x and 16x for me, I still keep them at 4x and 2.4x. I just want to keep the errors as low as possible.

I've ran into pixellation and freezing on several occasions.By eliminating my quality media/slow burn speed/no multi-tasking,those issues were on 1 very reliable sony dvp-ns325 standalone player. I cleaned it,it helped considerably, but when I fed my first dual layer verbatim +2.4x if would not play entire disc. My pc played it perfect,so I had to get another cheapie player and all is well again.

I also had trouble on a brand new HP 640c Lightscribe that came with my pc. The compatability was lower on stand alones, but when I tried to re-rip one of its backups,bam- crc errors out of the wazoo on Ty media! My original benq 1620 replaced that drive, LOL. Only 1 Ligitimate burn coaster this year, with many on the fly. I had a few discs that wouldn't even burn, just a couple bad apples in a spindle once in a while.

hi guys :)
i use nothing but RITEK GO4...GO5... and mainly R03 now booktyped -rom
my burners are
LITEON 16x DVD+- DL SOHW-1693S-KS04 (4 weeks old)
Sony DW-U18A Firmware UYSI (a rebadged LITEON ) came with the comp
had the odd few bad burns which is expected so i would reccommend these drives to anybody
i tell a lie about my RITEK being the only media i use
i'm expecting my first 100 Verb's to arrive today that creaky talked me into trying. (and another 100 R03's)
will know in the next week of burning if they are as good as people say they are
and i never burn faster than 2.4x-4x as saugmon has said (he knows his business)

I don't know about other members, but I definitely prefer my Maxell DVD+R to be Made In Japan. The same thing apply to genuine Taiyo Yuden (or the Fuji 8X DVD+R code: YUDEN-000-T02). Perhaps it's because I've had more experiences with the Maxell "M.I.J" over any "M.I.T", but of course it all boils down to the individual's preferences and experiences, in the end.

@gurnard - thanks for explaining.

@alkohol - MIJ Maxell is very difficult to find if not impossible in Canada. I checked all Maxell 8x DVD+R sold in the local stores here (Futureshop, BestBuy, etc) are all MIT.

@arznable,

It's every where i.e. Best Buy, K-Mart, Wal-Mart, Target, CompUSA, MicroComputer, Staples, and Circuit City. You just need to dig it deeper on those stacks and eventually you'll find a Maxell 8X DVD+R (Made In Japan) on those 25 discs a pack for $14.99 (mostly on sales for $9.99 at Wal-Mart or sometimes Best Buy.) At least where I'm at (Twin Cities, 10,000 lakes.) Below is some info on the Maxells.

Maxell DVD+R 4x (YUDEN000T01) <--Made In Japan (I used to buy these a lot too)
Maxell DVD+R 8x High Grade Video (MAXELL002)<--Made In Japan (I prefer this one)
Maxell DVD-R 1x (RITEKG03....)
Maxell DVD-R 2x (MXL RG01....)
Maxell DVD-R 4x (MXL RG02....)
Maxell DVD-R 4x (TYG01.......)
Maxell DVD-RAM 3x (MXL8)
Maxell DVD-RW 2x (MCC 01RW11n9)
Maxell DVD-RW 2x (TDK502sakuM3)

I think I will burn a lot of DVD, therefore I am looking for the 100-pack spindles only since they are more economical. I live in Toronto. I have searched through those local shops like Future Shop and BestBuy already. For Maxell 8x DVD+R 100-pack spindle, they have MIT ones only. However, Saugmon mentioned that after one or two sales later, they may have MIJ ones on sale, and the cycles goes on. I will be checking around and let you guys know, but I have yet to see a MIJ Maxell 100-pack 8x DVD+R spindle selling in any stores.

I picked up a spindle of Maxell DVD-R 100s MIT for $29.99CAN at Future Shop and they turned out to be Ritek-Go5s.

I'll give you my opinion when I've used a few OK!
