Taiyo Yuden is the best by far. More expensive than the rest, but definetly worth it. Verbatim is good too. Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim are the ones I always buy. Look for media that is made in Japan.

Fuji is very good and not as expensive you should research what media your burner and home dvd player are compatible with first then it will make things alot easier.

Hi,

Most any media will work for backing up files but for video reproduction you need good, proven, high quality media such as verbatum, taiyo yuden, maxell, sony mij, fuji mij (mij = made in japan), branded ritek ridata, Stay away from memorex, HP, phillips, no name, and retail store branded media eg. staples, compusa. Keep the burn speed to 4x.

stick w/ Taiyo Yuden as most others will suggest...Verbatim is my 2nd choice...and Ritek would be my 3rd...Maxells would be my 4th suggestion...

check my sig. for media ID coding that are proven winners...stay away from Memorex, philips, melody, imation and the other lesser know brands...i don't PERSONALLY like tdk either, but that is just me. :)

Recommended Media:

Taiyo Yuden 4x dvd-r TYGO1/ 8x dvd-r TYGO2/ 8x dvd+r YUDEN000T02/ 16x dvd+r YUDEN000T03
Verbatim 8x dvd+r MCC003
Verbatim dvd+r DL (MKM001)= flawless no compression backups

Monster18:
The quality media can save you many problems later on down the road.

Stand alones will recognize them better
Better picture quality when you play them, less issues
Less coasters/less wasted time and $
Longevity is increased
Your dma's won't be thrown into pio mode like the crap media will do.

Majority of issues are solved with the quality media like:
Taiyo yuden
Verbatim data life plus
Fuji
Sony 1x-8x
Maxell
Ritek
Ricoh

Then there's the quality difference between brand name media when switching to their opposite format like: TDK. Very good on their dash format, but their plus format has some crappy manufacturers. They use a manufacturer called c-magnetics corp. CMAGS for short! Cmags also make majority of media for Memorex/Phillips/majority of store brand name media like staples/and a whole slew of other generic brand names.

Because so many of these brand names use cmags, best to just use Taiyo Yuden media only.Even Taiyo Yuden can have fakes floating out there, that's why you buy them from a reputable seller.

I buy local on sale media and look for Made in Japan. Taiyo yuden makes media for sony and fuji on the labels that say made in japan.Hitachi makes the japanese +8x maxells.Hitachi is also japanese.

Check out dogbomb's sticky thread in this DVD-R media forum. You'll get a taste of how a manufacturer like cmags makes media for a slew of brand names. Pretty scary!

@ Monster18

I am new to this forum but what the regulars say is true. Buy the best media you can afford. I got stuck with some memo-sux because I didn't know any better (they turned out to be CMC MAGs). You might get what you think is a good burn using crappy media, but you will find out about the quality of your media/burn when you try to play the movie. And the strange thing is bad media may play well once or twice and then crap out the next time, or next month. Why waste time with cheap media when it will cost you more to fix it later? A good program that identifies media manufactures is found here at this site: DVD Identifier v4.1.0. It is free and will read the disk and tell you who really manufactured your disks. DVD Decryptor will also tell you the media id, and so will Nero.

Thanks to all of you afterdawn regulars who put out the info on the importance of good quality media as SAUGMON said :

Forgive me SAUGMON if the quote didn't come out right. I did a cut and paste from your reply as I agree 100% with you on your media choices.
This is my first post, but I have been reading this forum for a few months and really learned a lot about DVD burning. I learn something new here every day. Thanks again for having such an informative place.

Quality media doesn't mean you pay more for them. Those ritekr-03's. I pay 28 to 30 cents apiece when on sale on Office Depot brand +8x 100 pack spindles.

Those same ritek-r03 maxells will run about 35-40 cents apiece-that same maxell price on the japanese ones will yield the hitachi in the plus 8x media. I will pay up to 40 cents apiece for Hitachi, not ritek.

I haven't burned any ricohs lately,Mostly the maxell +4x. I'd get them on sale on the 20 pack Teon +8x at staples for under $5.00: That's less than 25 cents apiece.
The 40 packs turned out to be cmags.Huge quality difference between the 20 pack and 40 pack teons in the plus 8x speed.

Fuji +8x. I got a couple of 30 packs at staples for under $10. They were the Yuden000-T02 MID code. Sweet!

So that is my price limit, and its this price when on sale:
Ricohjpn-01 under 25 cents
Ritek-r03 under 30 cents
Hitachi/Yudenooo-T02 under 40 cents.
Full Hub Printable Hitachi and Verbatim-70 cents

Check http://www.nomorecoasters.com for a list of media codes and how good the disks are. In my personal experience i find Verbatim data life plus 8x DVD-R comes first, then TY, then Sonys and finally Maxells.

Having been lurking in the shadows for 4 months the one thing I have noticed is that no matter what thread I read and no matter what the problem the poster is having, the advice is usually --buy a better brand of disk.
Some of us do not have a choice.Where I live it is against the law to order disk by mail. They will be confiscated at the border. (Mexico).
My choice are as follows.
Office Depot at $1 usd each.
TDK-CMC at $1 usd each.
Sony at $5.50 usd each.
Occasionally Fuji film at $1 usd each.
This is buying in bulk.
Below if the copy/paste works is my experance with what I can get.

BRAND MFG. type code speed lost out of %lost
FUJIFLIM RITEK DVD+R RO3 8X 7 50 14%
OFFICE DEPOT PRINCO DVD-R NONE 4X 25 125 20%
TDK TDK CORP. DVD-R TTGO2 8X 1 50 2%
TDK CMC MAG DVD+R E01 8X 7 300 2%
TDK TDK CORP DVD+R TTGO2 8X 6 150 4%

It is difficult if you do not have access to all brands of media. Oftentimes it is easier to recommend changing the media first to see if it resolves the issue because it is the easiest solution, and it does solve a majority of problems. The key is using the media that works for you. If your burner does not have any problems with it, then use it.

It looks like the copy/paste scrambled things a bit. Simply stated the results from 675 disk are===

fujiflim ro3 RITEK 14% failure rate.
office depot-princo 20% failure rate.
TDK TTG02 TDK CORP. 2% failure rate. [dvd-r]
TDK E01 CMC MAG. 2% failure rate.[dvd+r]
TDK TTG02 TDK CORP. 4% failure rate. [dvd+r]

You've got TTG02 on both the plus and dash TDK's?
That should be the code on the TDK -8x. Those Plus TDK'S usually code as cmags.

Princo usually means crapco, and looking at that post-20% failure rate. I know Office depot uses ritek in their 100 pack +8x and -8x spindles. These are Ritek-g05 and Ritek-R03.Very good in both my benq's,and perform as well as my hitachi and yudens.

That sucks paying those prices down there.

Another thing: The variations among burners-quality-can contribute to that coaster rate. I have 5 DVD-RW drives. The quality difference between both my benq and other 3 burners are phenomenal. Over 99% success and viewing rate using ritek/ty/hitachi/sony/ricohjpn/verbatim data life plus.1 burn coaster this year. My other 3 burners couldn't even touch that rate and compatability on standalone players was the major problem.

C-mags: No problem with my benqs, but I burned them at 2.4x and have to watch out because one of my standalones don't like them.

There's a lot of things you can do to get the coaster rate down:
Burn slower-these newer 8x blanks will burn up to 12x & 16x for me.
Up to date firmware
No multi-tasking,turn off all background apps.
Defrag HD
Reduce compression
Keep pc free of virus's and spyware.
Software conflicts: Usually Nero and roxio when both are on pc.

- hopefully you also see the other recommendations too. I myself (and many others) don't only suggest changing media, certainly not just in itself. I like to have detailed logs to work from, and from there we attack all the things that are out of date, or set incorrectly. More often that not, bad media is a contributing factor; sometime there are people's setups whose only thing wrong is the media, but for me the majority of things i see are out of date settings, too high a burn speed and crap media. By far the most common problems with burning are too high a burn speed and/or bad media. I hear what you're saying re having limited media choices.. just hoping you see the other suggestions as well as 'change media' also :)

Yes I have seen the other suggestion and fixes. I guess the constant replies from many that "Your are using crap media" kind of got to me since I am sure there are many like me that do not have a choice.

On the flip side of the coin I have learned a lot reading reading this forum.
The request for posting logs made me start looking for and at my logs and comparing them to what I see posted one here.

Since I was 60 years old when I bought my first computer and 65 when I burned my first DVD I get frustrated when I see a request for the thingamabobitfudgeamatic that will help solve your problems. Just exactly where and what is it?
