Hi trying to make a few DVD's containing all my important files, this includes music videos, documents, etc... So basically i just want to make a DATA disc since I'm moving and want to take all my stuff with me. First of i'm not even sure if this is possible on DVD's, i'm new with this. I have tried and successfully made a dvd with a couple folders and a video, however when i put it in my dvd drive after and tried to play it, it said it couldnt read the disk.(saying something like it might be a format windows does not understand) Can someone please help? I'm using nero 6 by the way..
Yes, you can create a DATA DVD, so you can add all your MP3, your video files .AVI and your documents like .doc and .pst and .rtf etc...
Use good quality media, and don't burn too fast.
Personally, I burn everything at 2x and only burn 4x on my Taiyo Yuden.
And yes, I have 100% results cause I burn slow :)
As for your VideoDVD, it's basicly a DATA DVD but with a very specific format, what I mean is your files has to be in DVD format (.ifo/.vob) and be in a directory called VIDEO_TS.
You will also see a directory called AUDIO_TS but that one stays empty.
VideoDVD
---------
AUTIO_TS
VIDEO_TS <--- your DVD files .ifo/vob all go in here !
Same applies to video dvd, use quality media and burn slow :)

As you said, you cannot "Play" data and programs as you would play a DVD video.
When you wish to "play" the one or two AVI files you have, you must first open the disc, select the AVI file and double-click that in order to play it. Since you haven't got any sort of a continuing format such as VIDEO_TS, you cannot expect your PC to be smart enough to search through all your backed up programs and files lQQking for an AVI to play all by itself. When there are special programs, files OR small film clips that I wish to save, I put all like things together on a disc. All files on 1 disc, programs on another, etc.
You may wish to consider buying a small 20 GB HD as I did when I began, for about $20.00 (USD) or a 40 GB HD ($35.00 to $40.00 USD), a 2.0 USB enclosure ($19.99 to $24.00USD) and using that as your backup for all your files, programs and such. With prices as cheap as they are, it's well worth the small expense. A friend of mine picked up a 10 GB HD from eBay for $4.00 and a $19.99 enclosure complete with wires, fan etc. AND had the wires plugged in and all the screws in and was up and running in less than 5 minutes. No knowledge is required, just plug it in and it works :)
I now have a backup 200GB HD ($84.00) and an enclosure($24.00) and have all the room in the world to backup all my programs, files, music etc. . I have that in addition to my working C:\ drive (120 GB), my D:\ drive (120 GB) for music and editing and my working 2.0 USB H:\ drive, a 300 GB HD that I use exclusively for my DVD Video work.
You need not go so overboard as I did but a small HD is really the way to go, especially when you'll wish to update your stored files and programs from time to time and you can do that without losing a disc when you're working with a HD.
