After following the steps described here, the PS2 screen display still says Please insert a PlayStation or PlayStation 2 format disc.?

described where?
you need to tell us what steps you used to make the backup copy.

I also would assume you have your PS2 modded with a modchip or are using swap magic to run the backup disc?

what boot method do you use?
Like above, it would help to know how you boot
your back ups, what program you burn with
and at what speed you burn them
what DVD's you use (brand & speed)
what version PS2 you have.
all this will help us help you.

Okay...I just ordered Swap Majic to run back up disks on the PS2 console. Is this disk a one time deal where once you run it, you won't have to run it everytime you want to play a back up disk? Also, does it matter whether or not the media I'm buring the image to is DVD+ or -?

yes you have to use the disc everytime you play a backup of the disc so take care of the disc. Also some PS2 like +R and some dont. You get better compatibility with -R. So try either way and try diffrent media till you find some that work good on your PS2 and stick with them.

Also did you get a fliptop or a slide tool to get to the disc to swap it? if you place the Swap magic disc in you cant just hit the eject button and switch the disc it will reset the system. That is why you need a fliptop or slide tool to get around that part of the PS2. I also heard of people just keeping the top of the PS2 off but that isnt good for the system.

Is there any other way to play back ups on the console other than having to use swap majic or a modde chip?

You need to have your PS2 modded in some way YOU CANOT JUST BURN AND PLAY PS2 GAMES. Swap Magic or Modchip

With hdadvance you would also have to have a PS2 Network adapter and compatible hard disk drive.
