I purchased Verbatim discs and reduced the read and write speeds to 4x and the quality does not seem to get better. It still seems grainy compared to the original. Granted it is not a huge difference but you can tell. Any suggestions. I am using DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink btw.
jumps, skips, stutters, and freezes are a result of poor media and/or possibly burning too fast.
grainy, fuzzy and/or pixelated video is usually a result of too much compression.
Since you're using Shrink, lets look at some things to try to reduce compression.
Did you remove all unecesarry audio and subtitle tracks? (If you don't have digital audio equipment, get rid of the DTS 5.1 audio track. It's simply huge, and in my opinion not worth the required space for it's benefits over regular Dolby 5.1)
Are there any special features that you don't want or care about? Placing a still image in place of those unwanted special features can free up some precious space.
Is the movie more important than the special features? You can set the compression of the special features to max to allow more room for the main movie.
Did you use Deep analysis and the Adaptive Error Compensation settings when you did your backup? Deep analysis will add alot more time to your backup but is worth the wait since it will give better results. The adaptive error compensation settings (sharp, max sharpness, smooth, max smoothness) are user preferential(different people prefer different settings) so you'll have to experiment to find which one suits you best.
