I have played around with DVD Decrypter and Shrink, but have not really used either to any real extent. I've been waiting for the price of a good dual layer media to come down. This week on newegg TDK media, my favorite all time media, was released at 5 discs for $22.00. Good enough for me to start checking out burning in dual layer. I see all the settings for DVD-9 in shrink and was doing research on afterdawn as far as layer breaks. That is when I read about MDS files. Can anyone help me out with getting the layer break correct on dual layer media? Has anyone burned with a MDS file? I have been waiting to check out dual layer and I want to get it right as it will be a while yet till they drop under a buck ...

An MDS file is created by DVD Decrypter when it rips a disk in iso mode. It is a small file that contains all the information on the ripped files. If you are going to burn a dual layer I suggest that you use DVD Decrypter, I have found this to be the most successful program for dual layer backup. All you need to do is open Decrypter do iso read and then after the rip choose iso write, open your mds file and Decrtyper will rejoin all the files and burn. I have had no errors on playback on the 25 dual layers I have done using this program. I did have two coasters with Nero. Best of all Decrypter is free. You can also check the media forum on the best prices for media. Just my two cents :)

I have burned a few dl's with no problem using decrypter. However I am using a cheap player and it gets stuck on the layer break on occasion. Also just last night, I burned one with a lite-on 1633sx and though the player recognises it the dvd-rom in my alienware doesn't. Gladiator seems to work fine though.

Thanks for the information everyone. What about the remove layer break setting in preferences when doing a dual layer disc, should I leave it checked or unchecked?

Just use Decrypter in iso read mode it will do its thing, it will make an exact image of the file you don't have set anything. Then just switch to iso write and open the mds file and Decrypter will burn it, that is all you have to do.

Arniebear, Ran out of time to check it out last week, But had some time this morning. WOW!!!! Anyone wasting time with any other software or burning single layer DVDs is doing just that. Not only did I create a perfect back up first time out, but the disappointment of not having extras or menus on the second disc have all disappeared. Then to top it off , the backup plays on every last player in the house including a 3rd generation Toshiba that I had to send out to have updated just so it would play dual layer disc when they first came out . This player is old and it plays flawlessly. Thanks a heap. I can't wait for discs to drop another buck, but nothing can stop me now!! Scott

Glad to hear it worked out well for you, I too have an old Toshiba standalone never updated it though. My Decrypter dual layer backups using Verbatim disks work beautifully. It really the best at burning dual layer that I have found. Happy burning :)
