First time on this board, just downloaded DVD Shrink. Made a couple of back up dvds with no problems. Just tried to make a back up of Sin City and it appeared to work fine. But about 2 mins into the movie it started to skip and stop at random. Any ideas what may cause this? New copy protection maybe? I also have purchased DVDwizzard. Could I use this software first maybe, then shrink it?

Thanks to anyone to offer an opinion. Rod

Sounds like media issue..

What brand of dvd blanks are you using?

How fast did you burn the movie?

Using cheap media (i.e. - Memorex) is often the culprit of freezing/pixleation/skipping...

Burning too fast might also causes these errors...

Both of these factors combined, it would definitely happen...

Rod
its def. a media issue first use good blank media for your backups
Taiyo Yuden ,Verbatim or Ritek (ridata)or stuff that codes out as Taiyo Yudens which would be Fuji Film DVD plus Rs and Sony DVD plus Rs

second lower your burn speed to 4X max.

You can use poor quality media and get what appears to be a good copy but down the road a few months it may not play. This is typical of poor quality media and I learned the hard way. Made what appeared to be a good copy of a movie and when I went to play it several months later it jittered and skipped and did all sorts of stuff that it didn't do when it was first burned. I ended up having to do another copy off the original.

yeah palidin you can learn the hard way or use the good stuff in the first place and have top notch backups. some memorx will code out as Ritek (which is good media),if it codes out as CMC mag. your probably in trouble down the road as in read errors or just NOT playing back correctly.

getting the good stuff as in Taiyo Yudens or Verbatims is WELL worth it long term

Yep, some of my early burns on cmc mag (cmc=crappy media company?) are now unreadable. Most will still play, for now, but as far as burning, they are for s**t! Trust these guys when they talk about memorex, they just aren't worth the small savings!

MS Windows XP MCE SP2, Intel P4 3.20 GHz, 2.0 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce FX5600, Seagate 7200 rpm 200GB HDD, Sony SDMHS93 19" LCD, Field Value

Absolutely right aabbccdd. I have some of those Memorex made by Ritek but I've had them since before I knew enough to buy brands that would consistently be of good quality and avoid the crapshoot.

I've been using Fujifilm DVD -R's, I'm going to try a slower write speed. I burned it at maximum the first time, 8x. I'll try 6 or slower this time. Thanks for all the responses, Rod

You can ID your fuji's with this free proggy http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/ to see who actually made them. I don't recommend burning over 4x at least untill you are sure you have top quality media. I use verbatum datalifeplus which is one of the best medias available and still only burn at 4x. A few minutes saved burning is not worth the chance of write errors resulting in playback issues if you ask me.

I am having the same problem. Since I sold the original though, can I make a copy from the burned DVD on a better media disc and not have skippping? Also where do you get Taiyo Yudens or Verbatims ? And what is the pricing?

@rod33:

Just a thought, have you tried running the (original) movie through DVD Decrypter? Shrink isn't updated any longer and sometimes has a hard time breaking encryption, especially with the newer movies. Using a ripper/driver such as DVD Decrypter (also, no longer updated, but still works fine) helps out a lot. If you need info on how to use both proggies, just click on the link in my sig.

Good Luck!

Yes you can ,on many programs ,freeware use dvd shrink or dvd decrypter.
stuff you pay for BUT there are free trials; CloneDVD 2(which i use)with anydvd, Intervideo DVDCopy3

you can get Taiyo Yudens or Verbatims online at supermedia store.com ,meritline.com or rima.com newegg.com is ok too ,i would stick with these NOT shop4tek.

or you can get Verbatims at sams club ,office depot,staples as far as buying Taiyo Yudens the labels you want to look for are Fuijifilm,Sony and some Maxells, IMPORTANT they must be DVD+Rs and say Made In Japan ,on the label

@ts1982,
Those imation -Rs will probably come back as CMC mag. Just look at my sig line to see what i think of those discs..
@palidin, Firmware can do quite a lot to correct issues with burning different media, but if you burn to crappy media even at 1x, the best firmware in the world is not going to save that data. Crappy media can die quickly or slowly, but it will probably die on something important to you, or at great cost for you to replace. I don't want an argument either, and i can understand using what works best for you. But why pay for crap when you can have gold at the same price, or only slightly higher? I personally will stick with Tys and Verbs, and nothing else ever again will come near my burners. Just my 2cents on that.

Die CMC Mag!!!
