I've been using these bargain basement k-hypermedia DVD+R's and they won't work in my standalone dvd player. I've followed the directions for DVD decrypter/shrinker to the "T". So I've come to the conclusion that the media i've been using is total shite. Can anyone please suggest to me some good reliable brands of DVD+R mnedia? Thank you.

maxell 8x+ thse are made in Japan manufacture by Hitachi these are excellent.

sony 8x+ Made in Japen are also very fine media.

Fuji 8x+ Made in Japan these are Taiyou Yuden first class media.

most of these medias can be found at ur local staple, and most electronic store.

Verbatim are also fine media but as far as i know they are only sold at Bestbuy.

Verbatum tops my list too and here's some other good ones and some to stay away from.

Most any media will work for backing up files but for video reproduction you need good, proven, high quality media such as verbatum, taiyo yuden, maxell, sony mij, fuji mij (mij = made in japan), branded ritek ridata, Stay away from memorex, HP, phillips, no name, and retail store branded media eg. staples, compusa. Keep the burn speed to 4x.

Hi catfreak,

Is that a for sure thing with the office depot media or do they also buy from the lowest bidder? I don't know, just asking for future reference.

I wouldn't even put those khpermedia discs in my original khyermedia +8x dvd-rw drive. Very poor.

Different burners like different media. My benq 1620s:

Mxl-rg-02/03
Ritek: g04/g05/r03
Yuden000-T02
Maxell-002-00
Ricohjpn-01
Ty-g01
Mcc-002/003

Japanese sony +1x-8x/ Taiyo yuden +8x/-4x/ Maxell media, Verbatim data life plus!

Those office depot 100 pack spindles have coded Ritek-r03 in my last 2 trips there of their +8x. Very good media.

:) agree with everyone above with their suggestions of DVD+R media~ i personally have had ZERO problems with either the Taiyo Yuden DVD+R and the Verbatim DVD+R too~ :)

i basically use ONLY the 8x YUDEN000T02 Taiyo Yudens and the 8x/16x DVD+R MCC003/MCC004 in the Verbatim variety. i burn these babies @ 8x ALL THE TIME, while i would recommend you keep it down @4x for less chance of errors~ :)

good luck~

Recommended Media:

Taiyo Yuden 4x dvd-r TYGO1/ 8x dvd-r TYGO2/ 8x dvd+r YUDEN000T02/ 16x dvd+r YUDEN000T03
Verbatim 8x dvd+r MCC003
Verbatim dvd+r DL (MKM001)= flawless no compression backups

Dheff: 4x media on a 16x burner should be no problem, unless they are made by a poor manufacturer or maybe even fakes.

4x media is being phased out,so it is harder to find. What problems you will encounter is the newer 8x and 16x speed media. That's where your DVD-RW drive's firmware comes in. The newer media hitting the market may not be able to burn them, until you update the firmware version.

Another thing on these 16x burners, some of the 8x speed media will burn at 12x and 16x on them so keep aware of your max burn speed settings in your burn program.

Most of us still keep the burn speed at 4x. Less errors/better stand alone recognition/better playback/and fewer coasters.

I have Best success with Sony DVD+R (Made in Japan) Those are Taiyo Yuden made! Also, the Made in Taiwan Sony Media is Excellent too! Man.I.D. as Sony D11. The Made in Japan Fujis are Taiyo Yuden made too! Verbatim DVD+R gives me Excellent success too! The Maxell Media are very good too! I got a 50 pack of made in Taiwan DVD-R 8X and they I.D as RITEKG05 Very Good!

Use The Best Media for The Best Burns! TYs, Verbs,(Made in Taiwan) Sony MIJs (YUDEN000 T02), Sony Made in Taiwan DVD+R 16x, Maxell MIJ, RITEK G05.

Thanks Saugmon, that was very helpful, but for a person who has not even backed up one single dvd, you've got me confused with the coasters and firmware and such...so can you please explain this again. Thanks, I just wanted to make sure the first time that I didn't buy the wrong type of media

Dheff: Firmware is the built in programing for your burner. Media has codes on them for the many different manufacturers. These are MID codes. Firmware usually means what media/how fast/and increments it is allowed to burn certain MID codes. Manufacturers run tests on the newer MID codes and find what speed they recommend their burners to burn them at.Every so often, the burner manufacturers have an updated firmware that you can download it and flash your dvd drive so it'll be able to handle this newer media.

When you run into problems with different media, usually it has a different MID code,so you may have to update your firmware.

Also low quality media can cause you many problems and a lot of grief. Best to avoid the low quality manufacturers and stick with the high quality media like taiyo yuden, verbatim, ritek, fuji.Beware of memorex, store brand name media like staples/office max. They tend to use the lower quality manufacturers.

If your burner isn't brand new,you may want to watch out for 16x speed media. That firmware may have to be updated. Even brand new burners could have sat on a shelf for a while and have a very old firmware version.

You are just starting:
I still don't know the exact burner brand name and model #.

1) Try a small pack of Maxell plus 4x or 8x. Also pick up a small pack of Maxell dash 8x. Both formats in the 5 or 10 pack. Try to find the ones that say Made in Japan. Those are the better maxell discs.

2) Burn a few of these below 4x and test them to see how your stand alone dvd player/s/other pc drives/ and ps2s will take them. Some/few/or even none will have trouble with either format. You want to find out which format those players prefer without buying 50 or 100 discs that won't play.

3) After testing on those stand alones, you can then try to bump up that burn speed if you wish. Just remember, those stand alones will tell you which format/which speed burned/and even which burn program that they like. Many things can happen, and the standalones will pick out these problems.

as far as getting blank media Taiyo Yuden ,Verbatim or Ritek (ridata) in that order is what to get or stuff that codes out as Taiyo Yuden ,which would be Fuji Film ,Sony and some Maxell ,DVD plus R media THAT is (Made In Japan)

heres a guide to use all the programs out there follow this..

http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/index.html

Philips DVD+-RW DVD8701 means the burner supports BOTH plus and dash blank media

http://www.slysoft.com/en/

and remember to burn at 4X max. using the good media as i listed
another very easy program to use for noobs or anyone for that matter is CloneDVD 2 with running AnyDVD in the background .you can download the programs as a free trial for 21 days .here is that link

Dheff, you've got to check out the fuji media on sale at staples if you have one close. 30 pack spindles for $8.94. The plus,if made in japan, should be Yuden000-TO2. I'm not sure what the dash fuji are,but try picking a pack of the japanese spindles dash.

Try several of each format to burn, then test them on your standalones. They will tell you which format they prefer and stick with the format that performs better.

I've never encountered prodiscs. For 30 cents each,I'd take the ty- fuji and sony anyday over anything else. That's the cheapest,on sale fuji or sony Japanese media that I have seen yet this year.
