My daughter has just bought a new Philips Iqon PC with the Philips DVD drive: PBDV1640P. Presumably the speed is 16x. But can anyone tell me whether she needs DVD+R discs or -R? We can't find any info relating to this in the paperwork she got with the PC.

It really depens on your set up and situation. DVD-R is more compatable with 3 year or older set top dvd players than DVD+R but DVD+R can be booktyped dvd-rom (dvd-r can not) and dvd-rom is the most compatable format. Your phillips drive is an oem benq and is capable of bitsetting/booktyping. I am a fan of DVD+R media because of it's ability to be booktyped dvd-rom and I also feel it is the better technology. Use this free handy tool to find actual model # of your phillips. I have a hunch it could be a rebadged benq-1640. Also tell us the firmware version on it. This is a handy free tool and it also ID's the blank media for us along with your firmware version:
I'm with mort, That burner may be able to booktype the plus format to dvd-rom. You could also try a small batch of dash media and test both formats on the standalone/s,pc drives,p2s,and any other drives that those backups will play in. Make sure it is quality media,none of the cheap crap/TDK plus format/HP/And memosux.
If any of those players don't like a certain format,They will give you a no disc inserted type of error.Go with the format that the majority of those players accept from that burner.
