Let me introduce myself; I do multimedia work around my community. Turning VHS recordings of graduation parties into DVD's with custom menu's and music backgrounds. I don't know anything about the hardware side of things. I know the software (Studio 9, Adobe Premier/Photoshop CS2)-and that's it. I've been at going over this forum for about a month and I know this much;

Don't buy Memorex (Memowrecks). That's why I'm here. I've been trying to put movies on DVD9 discs to avoid compression quality loss. That was a r-e-a-l-l-y bad idea. (creaky, please help. Need DL discs) Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden are prefered.

Most of you used NEC or Pioneer burners. Plextor is said to be ideal.

After that I don't know anything. I'm not afraid to try and learn whatever it is you think I should know. Hit me with it. I saw someone posted a screenshot of PI/PIF performace. I don't know what that is, but I would like to. I see where people mention manufacture codes. I don't know the relevance of those either. I know nothing and will admit to as much. Feel free to shape and mold me. Educate my empty mind-I won't argue, you've already convinced me (wink & smile).

Hardware: Sounds like those backups will be playing in a slew of different stand alone dvd players and you'll probably be re-ripping those home video dvds for many extra copies.

1) You'll need a quality burner that will booktype the plus format into dvd-rom format,the more universally compatable format for stand alone players.There's quite a bit of variations of DVD-RW drives and stand alone players. I am very fond of both my benq 1620's. Those backups of my home videos and other backups on the booktyped plus format will just about play anywhere for me.

2) You also need the high quality media like taiyo yuden or verbatim data life plus and keep that burn speed under 4x.

3)No multitasking and keep the backup target from reaching the outer edge of the disc.

Between the combination of 1/2/and 3- the errors will be reduced. These errors will show in the PIE/PIF scan test. The fewer the errors,the better. Re-ripping those backup with many errors will be difficult.

I haven't done a lot of dual layer backups. They may be a little trickier on stand alones. Again,the booktyped dl media should help out.The verbatim data life plus +2.4x dl are very good.Not a whole lot of options out there for quality dl media.

It all comes down to quality and of the 5 burners I have,there is considerable differences of how stand alones react to my other 3 burners compared to my 1620s.Not even close!
