Hello,

I'm new to burning, so I'm sure most of my question is seen a lot but my particular case is hard to find any other solutions for. I started burning with Maxell DVD+RW's on a brand new computer DVD burner a couple weeks ago using DVD Decryptor and DVD Shrink. I was burning at 4x and had a couple discs come out fine but 4 out of 6 would skip during playback. I tried cutting back the write speed to 2x but it didn't make a difference. The movie would play perfectly on my computer player but not on an Apex external player which supposedly plays burnt discs fine. I decided to try using DVD+R's because I heard DVD+RWs have problems. I got some Maxell 8x DVD+Rs and tried them out with a movie but it was even worse. I know my burner is an 8x burner, but after I burned with these discs at 2x, I could not even play the movie at all in either of the players. It would just be blank. I am wondering if I need to upgrade firmware or if I should just up the write speed back to 4x since I'm using 8x discs? I really am not sure what to do or why the other discs woudl not work in the player properly. I ran CRC searches on all the discs and they read the error so I assume it is the player but I'm not sure about the new 8x discs. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Apex DVDs are picky about Blank media they read since it is a low grade DVD Player.

Also Maxwell media isnt very good media. I had problems with them and alot of others have had problems.

You should be ok at burrning at 4x I wouldnt burn faster then that.

What program do you use to burn your DVDs?

My sugesten is to try to booktype your burrner to burn the DVD+R disc as DVD-ROM disc which makes it more compatible with DVD players.

Ok.

How do I go about booktyping my burner in this fashion?

I'm using DVD Shrink and creating an ISO File and burning with DVD Decryptor.

I had an apex 1100a stand alone player. It was a little picky, not on format, but backups from different burners. It would not play the Plus backups from my kypermedia +8x/cyberhome +4x tv stand alone burner/I/O magic 16x EMPA drive. It did play the dash format for that empa drive. It played everything off my benqs, plus, dash, and booktyped dvd-rom backups.

8x maxell plus format are very good discs. Ritek-r03 on the taiwanese and Maxell-002-00 on the hitachi made japanese discs.

What's your 8x burners brand name/model#/ and firmware version?

Any other dvd programs other than dvd decrypter and dvd shrink?

Since 8x burners are older,a firmware update may also be needed.

You can download this free handy program to check the MID code on those maxells/your burner model#/ and also your firmware. Let us know that info. That burner model may be able to booktype, but not all burners can do that.

you booktype with DVD Decryptor by

opening DVD decryptor

Click on "TOOLS" at the top
then go to "DRIVE"
then in that list that pop's out click on "CHANGE BOOKTYPE"

Now another window pops up.
you need to choose the tab that has the Brand of burnner you have.

Then go to the pull down menu option part that says "change for" and choose change for (DVD+R/DVD+R DL)

Now in the new setting option pull down menu and choose "DVD-ROM"

then click on the CHANGE button in the right bottem cornner and it should burn your DVD+R as DVD-ROM now

I have 2 Apex Stand Alone players, BOTH of them play pretty much anyting I put in them. Also, in my opinion, Maxell Media is Very good Media. I won't rate it #1, but it IS in The Top 5!
I definitely agree to burn at 4X max for Best results! The Apex palyers may be low quality, but as I said, both of mine with different model #s play about anything.

Use The Best Media for The Best Burns! TYs, Verbs,(Made in Taiwan) Sony MIJs (YUDEN000 T02), Sony Made in Taiwan DVD+R 16x, Maxell MIJ, RITEK G05.

kris, your sony burner is a re-badged lite-on 852s.

I'm not sure if you can use that lite-on utility or not. Hopefully someone else can tell us.
